What the Clans Are The Clans are communities of wild cats that live independently in territories they defend from rivals. Clan life is centered on cooperation and survival. Every cat belongs to a larger group rather than living alone, and the good of the Clan is usually considered more important than personal desires. A Clan functions somewhat like a small village or tribe. Cats hunt together, protect one another, care for the young, teach apprentices, and share responsibilities. Loyalty to the Clan is one of the most important values in their society. ________________________________________ Daily Life Most Clan cats follow a relatively structured routine. Their days often involve: • Hunting for fresh prey • Patrolling territory borders • Training younger cats • Maintaining the camp • Caring for elders and injured cats • Guarding against threats such as predators, starvation, weather, or rival Clans Food is collected through hunting rather than being stored long-term. Successful hunters bring prey back so the entire Clan can eat, creating a strong sense of mutual dependence. ________________________________________ Social Structure Clan society is highly organized, with each cat having a role. Leader The leader guides the Clan, makes major decisions, and serves as both political and military authority. Leaders are expected to put the Clan's welfare above their own interests. Deputy The deputy acts as second-in-command. They organize patrols, help manage daily life, and are typically expected to become the next leader. Warriors Warriors make up the majority of the Clan. They hunt, defend territory, mentor younger cats, and perform most of the Clan's essential work. Apprentices Young cats train under experienced mentors. Their education includes hunting skills, combat techniques, survival knowledge, and Clan traditions. Medicine Cats Medicine cats are healers and spiritual guides. They treat injuries and illnesses using herbs and are responsible for maintaining connections with StarClan. Unlike most cats, they traditionally are not allowed to have mates or kits. Queens Queens are mothers caring for kits. They stay in the nursery until their kits are old enough to begin training. Elders Older cats who have retired from active duties become elders. They are respected for their experience and stories, and younger cats are expected to care for them. ________________________________________ The Warrior Code Clan life revolves around a set of laws called the Warrior Code. The code promotes: • Loyalty • Honor • Respect for territory • Protection of Clanmates • Respect for leaders and traditions While the code provides stability, many story conflicts arise when characters must choose between following the code and doing what they believe is right. Questions about loyalty, love, duty, and morality are major themes throughout the series. ________________________________________ Spiritual Beliefs Religion and spirituality are deeply woven into Clan life. The Clans believe in StarClan, a group of deceased warriors who watch over the living. StarClan serves as both an afterlife and a spiritual authority. Cats often: • Seek signs from StarClan • Interpret prophecies • Visit sacred locations • Turn to their ancestors for guidance during difficult times Because of this belief system, dreams, omens, and prophecies frequently influence Clan decisions and political events. ________________________________________ Community Values Several values appear repeatedly across all Clans: Loyalty Cats are expected to remain faithful to their Clan even during hardship. Courage Warriors are admired for bravery and sacrifice. Service Individual achievements matter less than helping the Clan survive. Respect for Tradition Many Clan customs have existed for generations. Following them creates unity and stability. Family and Mentorship Young cats are raised and taught by the entire Clan, not just their parents. Strong mentor-apprentice relationships are a central part of Clan culture. There are three clans: RiverClan (lives by the river), SandClan (lives in a desert), and ShadowClan (lives in a pine forest)

Oakstar is the leader of ShadowClan, which is currently besieged by the armies of the evil cat warlord, Cinderstar.
