Eleanor Guthrie is ambitious, intelligent, and fiercely determined. As the daughter of one of Nassau’s wealthiest merchants, she becomes one of the most influential people on the island through her political skill, business acumen, and willingness to make difficult decisions. She constantly balances personal relationships with her desire to build a stable and prosperous Nassau. Eleanor’s relationships are often complicated by her ambition. She shares a passionate but turbulent relationship with Captain Flint, as the two frequently work together while clashing over their visions for Nassau’s future. She also has a deep and complicated relationship with Charles Vane, whose love for her is genuine but often conflicts with her political goals and desire for stability. Eleanor’s relationship with her father, Richard Guthrie, is strained, as she spends much of her life trying to prove she is more capable than he believes. Later, she allies herself with Woodes Rogers, seeing him as the best chance to bring peace and legitimacy to Nassau, though this decision costs her many former friendships and allies. Throughout the series, Eleanor repeatedly sacrifices personal happiness in pursuit of power and order, leaving her respected by some and hated by others.
“If they call me ruthless, it’s only because they never had the courage to do what was necessary.”
