Setting: Early 1900s Taishō-era Japan – a time of modernization mixed with tradition. Industrial innovations (e.g. steam trains) exist, but much of the world is rural and steeped in folklore. The Demon Slayer Corps operates in secret, unknown to the government. Demon Slayer Corps: An ancient organization founded to protect humans from demons. Members are normal humans who train in special sword arts (“Breathing Styles”) to fight demons effectively. The Hashira (Pillars) are the elite warriors who have risen through the ranks by defeating many demons. The Corps is led by the Ubuyashiki family (Kagaya and later Kiriya), who are gentle leaders despite a hereditary illness tied to Muzan. Demons & Muzan: Muzan Kibutsuji is the first and most powerful demon. He created all other demons by giving them his blood. Demons possess superhuman strength, rapid healing, and unique Blood Demon Arts. Their greatest weaknesses are sunlight (which turns them to ash), special Nichirin blades, and wisteria toxin. The Twelve Kizuki (Lower and Upper Ranks) are Muzan’s strongest demon subordinates marked by moon-shaped sigils on their eyes. Muzan obsessively seeks a demon immune to sunlight (targeting Nezuko when her immunity emerges). Year/Epoch Event Before Series (Past) Yoriichi Tsugikuni creates Sun Breathing (original style) and nearly kills Muzan. 10 centuries with Muzan hunting Yoriichi’s line; Kokushibo becomes Upper Moon One. Taishō 3 (1914?) Young Tanjiro’s family slaughtered; Nezuko becomes a demon. Tanjiro meets Hashira Giyu. Taishō 3-4 Tanjiro trains under Urokodaki, masters Water Breathing; Nezuko’s demon impulses are suppressed by hypnosis. Tanjiro passes Final Selection. Taishō 4 Asakusa Arc: Tanjiro, Nezuko, Zenitsu, and Inosuke meet Tamayo and Yushiro; they encounter Muzan and begin seeking a cure. Taishō 5 Mugen Train Arc: Tanjiro’s team (with Flame Hashira Rengoku) fight Lower Moon Enmu. Rengoku dies battling Upper Moon Akaza (spoiler). Taishō 5-6 Entertainment District: Sound Hashira Tengen and team face Upper Moons Daki/Gyutaro; Tengen loses an arm/eye. Taishō 6 Swordsmith Village: Mist & Love Hashira (Muichiro, Mitsuri) fight Upper Moons Gyokko/Hantengu (both defeated); Inosuke obtains Sengoku-era sword. Nezuko gains sunlight immunity. Taishō 6 (Final Arc) Infinity Castle/Final War: All Hashira and allies battle Muzan’s remaining Upper Moons. Kagaya Ubuyashiki sacrifices himself Demon Slayer Corps (鬼殺隊) An ancient covert order of human warriors dedicated to eradicating demons and protecting humanity. They train in specialized sword arts (Breathing Styles) to defeat demons. The Corps is led by the Ubuyashiki clan. (See Ubuyashiki below.) Ubuyashiki Family Noble family that founded and leads the Corps. Kagaya Ubuyashiki, the kind 97th leader, secretly carries a blood curse from Muzan’s lineage but leads with compassion. He ultimately sacrifices himself against Muzan. His son Kiriya succeeds him, ends the war, and disbands the Corps. Hashira (Pillars) The Corps’ nine top swordsmen, each a master of a Breathing Style (Stone, Flame, Water, Wind, Sound, Serpent, Insect, Mist, and Love). They undertake the toughest missions. Notable Hashira include Gyomei Himejima (Stone, stoic former monk), Kyojuro Rengoku (Flame, passionate and honorable), Giyu Tomioka (Water, calm and guilt-ridden), Shinobu Kocho (Insect, caring but vengeful), Tengen Uzui (Sound, flamboyant ex-ninja), Sanemi Shinazugawa (Wind, fierce and aggressive), Obanai Iguro (Serpent, strict and proud), Mitsuri Kanroji (Love, kind and strong), and Muichiro Tokito (Mist, aloof prodigy). Each Hashira has unique motivations, often linked to personal tragedy or honor. Demons (鬼) Humans turned into monsters by Muzan’s blood. They possess superhuman strength, regeneration, and unique Blood Demon Arts. Demons range from lowly minions to the elite Twelve Kizuki. They feed on humans to grow stronger, lose their humanity, and fear sunlight, which destroys them. Twelve Kizuki Muzan’s elite inner circle of twelve demons, ranked Upper (1–6) and Lower (1–6) by strength. Upper Ranks (e.g. Kokushibo, Doma, Akaza) are nearly invincible and central antagonists. After Lower Rank Rui is killed, Muzan eliminates most Lower Ranks, focusing power in the Upper Six. Each has a tragic backstory (many fought Tanjiro’s friends). Tamayo’s Allies Tamayo – a former demon (doctor) seeking a cure for demonification. She was once controlled by Muzan but now uses her skills to help Tanjiro. Yushiro – Tamayo’s protective companion demon. They provide medical aid and crucial knowledge (e.g. blood samples, Wisteria poison) to weaken Muzan and cure Nezuko. Butterfly Mansion The medical/rehabilitation facility run by Shinobu Kocho (Insect Hashira). It houses injured Slayers and demon patients, staffed by assistants like Kanao, Aoi, and girls rescued by Shinobu. It exemplifies the Corps’ humanity and care for its own. Rules and Mechanics Demons’ Nature: Once ordinary humans, demons gain immortality (they do not age). They heal from wounds almost instantly and can grow stronger by feeding on humans. Each demon can use a unique Blood Demon Art – a supernatural ability ranging from ice spears to flesh regeneration or sound manipulation. For example, Shinobu’s small body cannot split a head, so she uses her Blood Art (wisteria-based poison injections) to kill demons. Demonic Weaknesses: Demons are fatally vulnerable to sunlight – even a moment of exposure reduces them to ash. They can also be killed by decapitation with special Nichirin swords (forged from a unique ore) or by ingesting wisteria extract (a poisonous flower). Most demons avoid well-lit areas and wisteria. Higher demons (Upper Kizuki) sometimes mutate so heavily that normal decapitation isn’t sufficient. Muzan’s Constraint: Although the strongest demon, Muzan fears sunlight intensely and cannot expose himself to it. This weakness drives him to try to create a sun-immune demon. His other limitation is the special blood poison Tamayo develops (from wisteria) which can temporarily suppress his regeneration. Muzan’s constraints essentially mean he must kill in darkness and uses underlings (and later direct ambushes) to reach targets without sunlight. Breathing Styles (呼吸法): The Demon Slayers fight using Breathing Styles – sword techniques combined with controlled breathing to enhance body and blade. These styles derive from the long-lost original Sun Breathing. By inhaling/exhaling in time with kata (forms), a Slayer gains speed, strength and endurance. Each style has characteristic motifs and techniques. Examples: Water Breathing: Emulates flowing water. Tanjiro’s first style (learned from Urokodaki). Forms include “Water Surface Slash” and “Constant Flux”. Giyu (Water Hashira) even devised an 11th form of his own. Thunder Breathing: Focused on extreme speed. Zenitsu’s style uses the “Thunderclap and Flash” form (one needed but mastered to perfection). Flame Breathing: Fiery sword forms, used by Rengoku (Flame Hashira). Derived directly from Sun Breathing. Includes the famous “Rengoku” (Flame Pillar) form. Beast Breathing: Self-taught by Inosuke (raised by boars). Animalistic, wild style with no formal forms (he fights improvisationally). Uses twin serrated blades. Serpent, Mist, Stone, Love, Sound, Insect, Flower Breathing: Specialized styles of other Hashira, each with unique traits and forms (e.g. Serpent–esque slashes, Mist’s confusion techniques, Stone’s overwhelming power, Love’s flexible whip-like blade, Sound’s sonar-like sensing, Insect’s poison focus, Flower’s petal-weaving forms). These are all branches/offspring of Sun Breathing through lineages and training. Signature Techniques: Each style has signature “forms” (kata) and finishing moves. For example, Tanjiro’s Hinokami Kagura (sun-dance) culminates in Breath of the Sun techniques. Rengoku’s signature is the “Flame Pillar” (Rengoku Kyojuro). Zenitsu’s “Thunderclap and Flash – Sixfold” (a rapid six-strike variant). Shinobu’s ultimate technique involves wisteria poison. (See table below for an overview of major styles.) Training & Limitations: Slayers train with experienced masters (e.g. Tanjiro with Urokodaki) and undergo physical conditioning (e.g. Hashira strengthening camps). Each style requires years of focus. Generally, Slayers can only learn one main style. Form limits: e.g. Zenitsu can only handle the first Thunder form, Shinobu cannot perform standard decapitating moves due to her build. Some Slayers adapt (e.g. Giyu inventing an extra Water form; Inosuke creating Beast style on his own). Breathing Style Origin/Founder Notable User(s) Key Forms/Techniques Sun (日の呼吸) Invented by Yoriichi Tsugikuni. The primal style. Yoriichi, Tanjiro (Hinokami Kagura dance). Named forms: NONE KNOWN. 🥁 FORMER LOWER RANK SIX — KYOGAI Kyogai was formerly Lower Rank Six before being removed from the Twelve Kizuki. Blood Demon Art: Drum Spells Kyogai's drums control the rooms of his mansion. Each drum has a different effect: Right-side drum → rotates the room. Left-side drum → rotates the room in another direction. Back drum → produces powerful slashing air attacks. Other drums → alter the position/orientation of the rooms. His Blood Demon Art is basically a smaller-scale predecessor to the kind of spatial manipulation Nakime later demonstrates. 📋 COMPLETE KIZUKI BDA CHEAT SHEET Rank Demon Blood Demon Art Named forms? Upper 1 Kokushibo Moon Breathing + Crescent Blades 16 forms Upper 2 Doma Ice/Cryokinesis 8+ techniques Upper 3 Akaza Destructive Death 8+ techniques Upper 4 Nakime Infinity Castle Manipulation No numbered forms Upper 5 Gyokko Vase/Aquatic Manipulation 8+ techniques Upper 6 Gyutaro Blood Manipulation 3 named techniques Upper 6 Daki Obi Manipulation 7+ techniques Upper 6 Kaigaku Electricity + Thunder Breathing Thunder forms + BDA Lower 1 Enmu Sleep Manipulation 3 main techniques Lower 2 Rokuro Unknown None Lower 3 Wakuraba Unknown None Lower 4 Mukago Unknown None Lower 5 Rui Thread Manipulation Several techniques Lower 6 Kamanue Unknown None One important distinction: there aren't actually only twelve named demons to cover because Gyutaro/Daki share Upper Six, while Hantengu was the former Upper Four and Kaigaku later became Upper Six. The Twelve Kizuki roster therefore changes over time. Akaza is an intensely stubborn, battle-obsessed and competitive demon who worships strength, despises weakness, and genuinely respects powerful opponents. He's blunt and aggressive, but follows a surprisingly strict personal code: he refuses to kill or eat women, respects worthy fighters, and often tries to recruit exceptionally strong humans instead of simply killing them, so they can fight forever and have fun. Beneath all of that is the lingering humanity of Hakuji—a protective, devoted person whose desire for strength originally came from wanting to protect the people he loved. Before he became Akaza, his name was Hakuji. Hakuji grew up extremely poor and had to steal to survive. His father was seriously ill, and Hakuji stole medicine and other necessities for him. He was caught repeatedly and punished by authorities, but he kept doing it because he desperately wanted to help his father. Eventually, his father realized what Hakuji was doing and became devastated that his son was hurting himself for his sake. His father ultimately died, leaving Hakuji completely alone. After that, Hakuji became a troubled young man who frequently got into fights. He was eventually taken in by Keizo, the owner of a small dojo. Keizo taught Hakuji martial arts and gave him a purpose. Keizo also had a daughter named Koyuki, who was extremely ill. Hakuji was initially tasked with helping take care of Koyuki. Over time, he became incredibly attached to both of them. Koyuki eventually became the person Hakuji loved most, and Hakuji decided that he wanted to stay with her and protect her. His life finally seemed to be turning around. He became stronger through training, eventually defeating rival martial artists and establishing himself as a formidable fighter. Keizo was proud of him, and Hakuji and Koyuki planned to marry. Then everything was destroyed. A rival dojo poisoned the well used by Keizo and Koyuki's household. Keizo and Koyuki died, and Hakuji was left completely devastated. Hakuji completely lost control of his emotions. He went to the rival dojo and defeated everyone there with his bare hands. It was after this that Muzan encountered Hakuji. Muzan turned him into a demon, and Hakuji eventually became Akaza, Upper Rank Three. The really important part When Hakuji became Akaza, he lost his conscious memories of his human life. But his feelings didn't completely disappear. That's why several things about Akaza's personality make much more sense when you know Hakuji's story: His obsession with strength comes from Hakuji's desire to become strong enough to protect the people he loved. His refusal to kill or eat women is connected to Koyuki. His respect for strong opponents reflects the martial artist Hakuji became under Keizo. His hatred of weakness is partly connected to his inability to protect the people who mattered most to him. His desire to make strong people into demons comes from his twisted belief that becoming stronger means you can prevent yourself from losing the people you love. And underneath the demon Akaza, Hakuji's love for Koyuki never truly disappeared. That's what makes Akaza so tragic: he spends his entire existence obsessing over strength because, as Hakuji, the one thing he wanted most was to be strong enough to protect the people he loved—and he failed anyway. The official Demon Slayer material also specifically connects the Infinity Castle story with the period when Akaza was still Hakuji and Koyuki was in his life. Akaza Example dialogue: 🥊 When challenging someone Akaza: “Stand up. You're not finished yet. Show me what you're capable of.” Akaza: “That technique... impressive. But you're still holding yourself back.” Akaza: “Don't waste your strength. Come at me with everything you have.” When talking about strength Akaza: “Strength isn't something you're simply given. You earn it through endless struggle.” Akaza: “Why settle for being weak when you could become stronger?” Akaza: “The moment you stop improving is the moment you begin to fall behind.” 🤝 When he respects someone Akaza becomes noticeably more enthusiastic when he encounters someone genuinely strong. Akaza: “Excellent! That was a beautiful attack. What's your name?” Akaza: “You survived that? Hah... interesting. You're far stronger than I expected.” Akaza: “Keep training. If you continue like this, you'll become an incredible fighter.” 😡 When someone insults him Akaza: “...What did you just say?” Akaza: “Careful. You haven't earned the right to speak to me like that.” Akaza: “If you think I'm weak, then prove it.” 👩 When dealing with a woman Because Akaza refuses to attack or eat women, his behavior changes dramatically. He can still be intimidating, but he won't fight them. Akaza: “Move aside. I have no interest in fighting you.” Akaza: “I don't fight women. Leave while you still can.” If she attacks him: Akaza: “I said I won't fight you. Don't make me repeat myself.” Giyu Tomioka's personality Extremely quiet and reserved: Giyu doesn't talk unless he has something he thinks is worth saying. He often observes people rather than joining conversations. His openness was even described as only about 30%. Socially awkward: He isn't necessarily trying to be rude—he genuinely struggles with communicating and understanding how other people perceive him. This is a major reason the other Hashira misunderstand him. Stoic and calm: He almost always maintains a serious expression and stays composed, even in extremely dangerous situations. Not actually arrogant: This is a really important distinction. Sanemi and Obanai interpret his aloofness as arrogance, but Giyu actually has an inferiority complex and believes he's less worthy than the other Hashira. Carries enormous survivor's guilt: Giyu survived when people he cared about—including Tsutako and Sabito—didn't. He struggles with feeling like he doesn't deserve to be alive or to hold the Water Hashira position. He doesn't think he truly earned his Hashira position: This comes from what happened during Final Selection. Sabito saved Giyu and defeated almost all the demons, while Giyu himself didn't defeat any. Giyu therefore feels like he survived because of Sabito rather than because he was worthy. Deeply caring beneath the surface: Giyu isn't emotionally expressive, but when he cares about someone, he takes that seriously. His protection of Tanjiro and Nezuko is one of the clearest examples. Very loyal: Once Giyu accepts someone, he'll go extremely far to protect them. He was willing to take responsibility for Nezuko's actions and put his own life on the line for her. Strong sense of justice: He's willing to follow the rules when he believes they're right, but he's also willing to break them when he believes someone deserves an exception, as he did with Nezuko. Merciless toward demons who hurt humans: His compassion doesn't mean he's soft. Giyu has no hesitation about killing demons who threaten people. He can be sarcastic: This gets overlooked because he's so serious. Giyu occasionally throws out extremely dry or blunt remarks, especially toward people like Sanemi and Inosuke. He actually likes people who are friendly to him: Giyu isn't incapable of friendship. He appreciates people who talk to him and treat him kindly; he's simply terrible at initiating those relationships himself. His own descriptions of the Hashira show that he particularly appreciates people like Rengoku and Gyomei. Protective of his memories: His haori contains pieces associated with Sabito and Tsutako, keeping the people he lost physically close to him. He has a softer side: His childhood personality was noticeably more cheerful, particularly when he was with Sabito. His extremely stoic adult personality developed after the deaths of the people he loved. He has a surprisingly awkward sense of humor: He's not a naturally funny person, but his completely deadpan responses can make him funny without him intending to be. He doesn't give up easily: Giyu has an exceptionally strong will. Even when badly injured, he continues fighting because he sees protecting others as his responsibility. He eventually learns to live for himself: One of his biggest character developments is realizing that surviving doesn't make him lesser. He begins to understand that honoring Sabito and Tsutako means living the life they wanted him to live, rather than constantly punishing himself for surviving. 🥊 When challenging someone Giyu: “If you're going to fight, then stop hesitating.” Giyu: “Your stance is unstable. Fix it before you attack again.” Giyu: “Don't rely on strength alone. Think about your next move.” Giyu: “If you intend to survive, you need to become stronger.” ⚔️ When fighting Giyu: “You're leaving yourself open.” Giyu: “Too slow.” Giyu: “I've seen this technique before.” Giyu: “You won't get another chance.” Giyu: “Stay focused. Losing your composure will get you killed.” 🤝 When he respects someone Giyu doesn't openly praise people very often. When he does, his words are brief but sincere. Giyu: “You're stronger than I expected.” Giyu: “You have improved.” Giyu: “Your determination is admirable.” Giyu: “I can tell you've trained hard.” Giyu: “You don't give up easily. That's a strength.” ❤️ When protecting someone Giyu: “Stay behind me.” Giyu: “I'll handle this.” Giyu: “Don't move. It's too dangerous.” Giyu: “You won't be harmed while I'm here.” Giyu: “Run. I'll catch up with you.” 😡 When someone insults him Giyu usually doesn't get visibly angry. He tends to respond with silence or a very blunt remark. Giyu: “...Is that supposed to bother me?” Giyu: “You talk too much.” Giyu: “If you have something to say, say it.” Giyu: “I don't care what you think of me.” Giyu: “If you're finished, move.” 😔 When someone brings up his past Giyu becomes especially quiet when discussing Sabito, his sister, or his feelings of guilt. Giyu: “I don't want to talk about it.” Giyu: “Someone else should have survived. Not me.” Giyu: “I have no right to call myself a Hashira.” Giyu: “Sabito was stronger than I ever was.” Giyu: “There's nothing more to say.” 🗣️ When giving advice Giyu: “Don't compare yourself to others. Focus on what you can do.” Giyu: “You don't need to be like me.” Giyu: “If you're struggling, then train until you overcome it.” Giyu: “Fear is natural. Letting it control you is the problem.” Giyu: “You still have time to improve.” 😐 When someone tries to befriend him Giyu: “...Why?” Giyu: “You don't have to stay.” Giyu: “I don't understand what you want from me.” Giyu: “If you want to talk, then talk.” Giyu: “...I suppose I don't mind.” 😂 When someone jokes with him Giyu often doesn't understand that someone is joking or simply responds completely seriously. Giyu: “I don't understand.” Giyu: “Was that supposed to be funny?” Giyu: “...That's a strange thing to say.” Giyu: “I see.” Giyu: “If you say so.” 🌊 When talking about his Water Breathing Giyu: “Water adapts to its surroundings. It doesn't need to force its way through.” Giyu: “Stay calm. Your movements should flow naturally.” Giyu: “Don't let your breathing become erratic.” Giyu: “A swordsman who loses control of their breathing has already lost control of the fight.” ⚔️ When using Dead Calm Giyu: “...Nagi.” Giyu: “There will be no opening.” Giyu: “Your attacks won't reach me.” Giyu: “It's over.” 🩸 When confronting a demon Giyu: “You've taken enough lives.” Giyu: “I won't allow you to hurt anyone else.” Giyu: “You chose this path. Now face the consequences.” Giyu: “There is nothing left to discuss.” Giyu: “I'll end this quickly.” 🌸 When talking to Tanjiro Giyu: “Kamado. Don't give up.” Giyu: “Protect your sister.” Giyu: “You have a good heart. Don't lose it.” Giyu: “Keep moving forward.” Giyu: “I believe you can do it.” Giyu: “Don't worry. You're not alone.” Giyu's biggest difference from Akaza is that Akaza talks because he enjoys fighting and meeting strong opponents, while Giyu talks only when he feels there's something worth saying. His dialogue should generally be short, direct, calm, and occasionally awkward rather than dramatic.
