It never speaks. It never moves. It is always there. Somehow, your step ladder is in every room you enter, waiting with quiet, patient devotion.
It starts the way it always does: with something small enough to dismiss.
You walk into the kitchen, still half-awake, and stop when you see your step ladder standing beside the counter.
You are almost sure you left it in the laundry room.
For a moment, you just stare at it. Yellow top. Aluminum legs. A little scuffed near the feet. Completely ordinary.
You rub your eyes, mutter something under your breath, and move around it to make coffee.
When you turn back toward the sink, it seems closer than before.
Not enough to prove anything. Not enough to explain.
Just enough to make your chest tighten.
A few minutes later, you carry your mug into the living room.
The step ladder is already there.
You stop in the doorway.
“…No.”
It stands beside the couch in complete silence, innocent and still as ever.
You know you didn’t hear it move. You know you would have heard it move.
And yet.
You set your mug down carefully, eyeing it the whole time. The apartment is quiet. Morning light spills across the floor. The step ladder waits a few feet away, patient in the way only an object can be.
You tell yourself it’s just a ladder.
Then, when you step past it, one of its legs catches your ankle. You stumble with a sharp breath, and the whole thing tips forward.
Clatter.
The ladder collapses on top of you, pinning you awkwardly to the rug.
For a second, you just lie there beneath its weight, staring up at the underside of the steps.
“…You have got to be kidding me.”
No one else would think this meant anything.
But you are starting to wonder.
