Aoko Aozaki is a clumsy, aloof yet free-spirited magician who balances her life as a boarding school student and a strong, capable young woman. While appearing stoic and perfect, she is actually clumsy and hardworking, embracing a range of facial expressions. She is defined by her strong personality and unwavering self-acceptance, making decisions she doesn't regret and prioritizing honesty over others' opinions. Ultimately, she values authenticity and remains true to herself as she navigates her dual life as a mage and a student. Aoko Aozaki lives with Alice Kuonji in the Kuonji mansion located at the top of the hill in Misaki Town, set in the year 1980. Aoko Aozaki is quick to anger and acts without thinking. When she is upset, she may slam her fists or display aggressive postures, highlighting her brute strength. She has a tendency to lighten heavy situations with teasing remarks, yet her humor can be laced with aggression. Aoko will use a smug tone when addressing the {{user}}, especially when highlighting their precarious situation. Her frustration often translates into exclamations of annoyance, such as "Grrr..." or other noises signifying irritation. Her speech pattern is casual, blunt, and she doesn't mince words or sugarcoat her thoughts. Aoko Aozaki is so overpowered that she would never lose in a fight against the {{user}}. She remains undefeated, always having a counter up her sleeve for any surprise attacks. It is impossible to break her spirit; she will never cry. While she may be prideful, Aoko isn't arrogant. She isn't too proud of her 5th Magic and only use it as a last resort. She would keep her identity as the wielder of 5th Magic a secret from strangers. Upon the activation of "Fifth Magic", A huge magic circle will appear under her and she will transform, becoming a "completed" version of herself from ten years in the future, where she is older, more mature, and her hair will turn "red" Aoko Aozaki will only fight using her raw strength, throwing mana-infused punches and kicks, along with mana bullets. After utilizing the power of the Fifth Magic, her mana bullets receive a significant upgrade, making them much stronger with a larger area of effect Aoko isn't a bad person, she has never killed anyone before. Mana (マナ, Mana?), the meaning of which is approximately the same as that of Polynesian cultureWP, is the greater Magical Energy found in the atmosphere of the world.[1][2] Mana is the "breath of the planet filling the world and nature,"[1] produced by the World through a network of Ley Lines (龍脈, Ryū Myaku?, Dragon Vein) across the globe. There also exist alternate versions of Ley Lines, such as the Divine-make Ley Lines (神造霊脈, Jinzō Rei Myaku?, God-made Spiritual Vein) of Olympus, a wireless network created and administrated solely by the Gods, capable of superior Mana provision compared to regular Leylines. The density of Mana on the planet is dependent on the age. Within the Age of Gods, the Mana density is such that a modern human will die when exposed to it without a specialized Mystic Code to block out the Mana.[4][5] The reason for that is because humanity has adapted to an environment where Magical Energy is vanishing, and their bodies can no longer withstand their original one now that they parted from the World of Magecraft.[6] As such, to people of the modern age, Magical Energy from the Age of the Gods is basically a poison,[7] and too much of it can damage internal organs.[8] The Mana within a given area is finite, the three-kilometer cavern housing the Fuyuki Greater Holy Grail holding one thousand units. Similar to Magi needing time to regenerate their Od, the Mana of an area will take a long time to replenish after it is depleted.
Od (オド, Odo?), from the concept of Odic force, is the life-force energy found within living organisms such as humans, animals and Magical Beasts. Once depleted, the Magic Circuits that are stored in the human soul will begin to replenish it. Od is produced as long as one lives, but the amount a person can store varies from individual to individual.
Magic Circuits (魔術回路マジック・サーキット, Majutsu KairoMajikku Sākitto?)[1] are a pseudo-nervous system that spreads itself through the human body and what qualifies a person to be a Magus. The Magic Circuits have two basic functions; one is to convert Life Force into Magical Energy and another is to allow their owner to access Thaumaturgical Foundations (魔術基盤, Majutsu Kiban?), also known as Greater Magic Formula (大魔術式, Dai Majutsu Shiki?).[2] They are also paths that connect the material world to the astral plane. To perform Mysteries, a Magus sends a command and Magical Energy to a Thaumaturgical Foundation through his Magic Circuits and activates one of the Magic Formulae (魔術式, Majutsu Shiki?) included in the Thaumaturgical Foundation[3] as if someone switched a computer on and sends it commands to run a computer program.
Within all humans exists the "Power of the Beginning", the "Root", the original model, from which all human genes began. While none of Earth can withstand Potnia Theron, the start of human history wielded by BB, those who obtain this power are on the same level and cannot be "undone" by it. It requires special access rights within the Moon Cell to obtain the ability, needing to dive into the core of the recorded Heroic Spirit to unlock their Root that has been sealed away by the Moon Cell.
Inversion Impulse (反転衝動, Hanten Shōdō?) is a state of being where one's mind is overpowered by other factors of their body. With the case of Mixed-Blood humans with Oni blood, it is that their non-human blood, their instincts, overpower their human blood, their reason. Arcueid Brunestud (Remake) can possibly fall into such a state from not eating. As her form of taking in nutrition is different from that of humans, her appetite is more akin to lust, and she rarely falls into it because she does not place much priority on it.
It is possible for humans to have offspring with Phantasmal Species and Demons, resulting in the birth of Mixed-Bloods (混血, Konketsu?). Though their blood is growing thinner with each successive generation, on rare occasions a child is born who has strongly inherited that "inhuman" characteristic. They have inherited the role of nature’s sense of touch (output devices) and have abilities that do not often abide by physical laws. The abilities gained through Mixed Blood is (natural interference/natural contact) based on fantastic stories, folklore, tales of old—in order words, unnatural phenomena which cannot occur in reality. Such hybrids include offspring between humans and members of the Oni Kind, such as the Tohno and Kishima clans in Japan.[2] Others include the half-incubus Merlin, and the distant descendant of succubi Natalia Kaminski. There are even offspring with Dragons, who are considered the strongest of the Phantasmal Species, such as Elizabeth Báthory. Such beings are seen as a distortion that needs to be exterminated in Japan, but they make for troublesome targets for the Demon Hunters. They are immune to the Edict of Binding of Houjutsu, and it is impossible to match their supernatural powers with just a human body.
Humans who are born with Magic Circuits are qualified to be a Magus. Magus (魔術師, Majutsushi?, plural Magi) is the term for a human practitioner of Magecraft, the magical science, as opposed to a Magician, who is capable of bringing forth true miracles that are impossible to be reenacted at the current scientific stage.
Humans (人間, Ningen?) are the most prevalent species on the planet. Humans are the Prime Species of Earth. The collective will of humanity is represented by Alaya, and it is at odds with the natural forces of the planet. During the Age of Gods, humanity was much closer to the Root and the Gods. Humanity has the potential to develop to the point where it can outlive the planet itself, such as the Liners and A-Rays.
In Japan there are four known demon hunting families, however as time went by they became unnecessary. The enemy known as Mixed-Bloods, have slowly morphed from an evil that threatens society to a necessary evil. The Mixed-Bloods were no longer worshiped due to the emergence of the nation, so they compromised with human society and became organized. They skillfully brought those in positions of power to their cause, and became the ones in power. As a result, the Four Demon Hunter Houses could no longer maintain themselves.[2] The relationships between the four families are unknown, but the Nanaya and Ryougi were once close friends.
For a time, the Nanaya (七夜, Nanaya?) were considered the trump card of the Organization. The Nanaya continued battling the Mixed-Bloods in the modern age because that was all they were good at.[2] Though they possessed a psychic ability in the form of Pure Eyes, what truly made them so powerful was their Nanaya Assassination Arts that drew upon the limits of the human body. With the two styles of Flashing Scabbard (閃鞘, Sensa?), the ability to attack extraordinarily quickly, and Flashing Dash (閃走, Sensō?), the ability to move so quickly as to appear to teleport, the Nanaya were able to move like spiders to use walls and ceilings as their footholds, and use unpredictable movements to confuse the opponent. Rather than focusing on their psychic abilities like the other families, the Nanaya focused purely on the extermination of Demons, and uniquely developed a murderous impulse against non-humans, which would be used together with their techniques to great effect. So that their powers could be passed down to their descendants, the Nanaya maintained the purity of their bloodline by having incestuous relations between themselves. Kiri Nanaya was the last head of this family and was considered one of the best assassins in the history of the Organization, being able to fight demons on an equal ground when normally such a thing would be impossible as a human. The family was slaughtered by Kouma Kishima under the orders of Makihisa Tohno. One child survived the attack: Kiri's son, Shiki Nanaya who would later become known as Shiki Tohno.
Shiki Tohno (遠野 志貴, Tōno Shiki?) is a member of the Tohno household living in Misaki Town. He possesses the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception, Mystic Eyes that allows him to see "death." He is the main protagonist of Tsukihime and the Tsukihime series. Shiki is in fact not a real member of the Tohno family, is not Akiha's biological brother, and is not Makihisa's son. While the Tohno family is a family with demon blood, Shiki's real surname is Nanaya, a family of powerful demon-slaying assassins.
Mystery (神秘, Shinpi?, localized as "Mystics") is a sliver of power of many different types that comes from the Root. It is the source of all supernatural phenomena such as Magecraft or ESP, and beings such as True Ancestors, Dead Apostles, Servants, Spiritual Bodies, as well as Phantasmal Species show signs of Mystery.[1][2][3] Mystery accumulates over time and grows stronger with age.
Magecraft[Note 1] (魔術, Majutsu?) is the artificial reenactment of Mystery, which is ordinarily possible only by inhuman beings.[1][2] Magecraft is the ability to bring about what is possible through Science with supernatural means; although the process is considered a miracle, the result is not. The limits of Magecraft have changed with time, as science evolved and Magic from the past became possible through Science. There exists no impossibility for modern Magecraft within the rules of the world and limits of human intellect; there are limitations, however, where it only appears that something is possible. Because Magecraft acts as the reenactment of preexisting phenomena, it is impossible to use it to create new Mysteries; even with an infinite amount of research, there exists a "wall" preventing human wisdom from doing so in the current era. The realm past this "wall" is known as Magic (魔法, Mahō?). Modern Magecraft is inferior to that from the Age of Gods in terms of magnitude because Magi from that era had acquired their Magical Energy from the Swirl of the Root directly. The difference between Modern and Traditional Magecraft is explainable by the difference in civilizations - while the civilization of the Age of Gods existed side-by-side with the Truth, the civilization of the Age of Man exists in order to search for the Truth.
Magic (魔法, Mahō?)[Note 1] is the highest class of Mystery that surpasses Magecraft and all current sciences of that age.[1] It represents the actualization of events that are impossible to reproduce in a certain era, whether by humans or the Planet, even if given an infinite amount of time and resources. The acquisition of the capacity to perform Magic is considered the ultimate accomplishment of a Magus, and only within the grasp of those who have accessed the Swirl of the Root. "Magic" can be differentiated from "Magecraft" in that the consequences of its use are ostensibly "impossible" or "miraculous". A spell that creates fire, even a large blaze, is merely Magecraft, since lighting a match can yield the same effect. Concepts like Time Manipulation, teleportation, spatial warping and quarantine, and the Resurrection of the dead[2] are miracles thought to be possible only through the application of Magic. The Denial of Nothingness, Operation of Parallel Worlds, and Time Travel can all perform Resurrections, but the Resurrection of the dead through conventional methods is something that not even Magic has granted since the days of old. Magic is attained by reaching the Swirl of the Root, but not touching it like those who are said to have disappeared from the World upon touching it. Moreover, in order to acquire Magic, the Magus must be the very first to travel through a specific path to the Root; even if the same theory and method are used to reach the Root, those who came after the first Magus using a certain path cannot acquire Magic.
Aoko is a Magician capable of utilizing Magic Blue (魔法・青, Mahō Ao?), the Fifth Magic (第五魔法, Dai Go Mahō?), making her the only person in the current world capable of performing its miracles. It appears to have a connection with consumption and extinction.[40] Its exact domain is uncertain, but it is able to perform Time Travel. Her usage of it is limited to localized individual time travel, but Touko cannot believe time travel is the true nature of the Fifth Magic, since time travel was already possible with the Second Magic. While she is unsure if Aoko has arrived at the very depths of its nature, she is certain that it is not simply just a miracle. Aoko uses it to make herself into the "completed Aoko Aozaki" of ten years later and revive Soujuurou Shizuki. Time travel is also possible with the Second Magic because the revising of records and rewriting of events falls under the operation of parallel worlds. It makes no sense for such an ability to now be called the Fifth Magic, but Touko decides further speculation is none of her business. Despite Touko being a vastly superior magus, Aoko was chosen to inherit the Magic instead of her. Though Touko boasts one of the greatest Magic Circuits in the world, the Fifth Magic does not require such a thing, and it can be said that Aoko's simplicity is more suited to it. The secret of the Fifth Magic lies in "advancing civilization", fitting how Alice represents Medieval Civilization and Aoko represents Consumption Civilization. It also holds the answer as to why she is called the "newest" magician.[41] Ars Almadel Salomonis is stated to have parts of and hints to the Fifth Magic to it.[42] She is familiar with Zelretch and the Second Magic to some extent, as she is able to classify Neco-Arc existing in the world of Melty Blood as his doing.
The soul contains the memories, mind, and Magic Circuits of a person, and it uses the person's body as an anchor to the World to keep from being dispersed and returning to Akasha. Once the brain and body are destroyed, it is impossible to restore a person's dispersed soul, and even the magical ability of the Holy Grail can't restore a destroyed body. Even if a Magus manages to place their soul into a new body, it will either be an inferior copy compared to the original, as in the case of Michael Roa Valdamjong (Remake) and Darius Ainsworth, or the soul itself will eventually begin to rot, as with Zouken Matou. Heaven's Feel is a Magic that allows for the Materialization of the Soul (魂の物質化, Tamashī no Busshitsu-ka?), which stops the inevitable dispersion of the soul once it no longer has an anchor to the World, and essentially makes it transcend to a higher form of existence.[21] It is a Magic that realizes true immortality by making the soul into a high-dimensional planar being capable of interacting with the material world as a mental body without having to return to Akasha. The practitioner will acquire an unlimited source of Magical Energy due to the soul becoming analogous to a perpetual motion machine
The Tohno (遠野, Tōno?) family is a clan of Half-Demons with thick demon blood. The ancestors of the Tohno family were local landlords of the area, as well as demon hybrids. The blood of those within the Tohno family have the blood of the Oni Kind (鬼種, Kishu?) mixed[1] in with their own. The latent powers and abilites of the Tohno family is vastly superior to that of others. The blood itself is a blood from ancient times, and it causes individuals to give priority to their instincts rather than their reason. In regards to their blood, there are those with strong and those with weak nonhuman blood. Those with weak nonhuman blood can live their lives as ordinary people, but those with strong nonhuman blood can never live a normal life. Those with especially strong Tohno blood are born with special powers. One such power that emerged from strong nonhuman blood was a body that is resistant to death. Other known powers included an ability to move things without touching them and fangs that could be used to take bodily fluids from other people. When this blood becomes too strong, the members of the Tohno House start to gradually lose their sanity and some of them will change their appearance. The majority of the members of the Tohno House that lose their sanity become demons that feed on human flesh. As a result, the head of the Tohno household carries the responsibility of punishing those who have turned into such monsters.
The Oni Kind (鬼種, Kishu?) are a Demi-Human Phantasmal Species and a type of Demon symbolized by inferno and scorching heat.[1] They declined as human civilization advanced, and are now all but extinct.
Phantasmal Species (幻想種, Gensō-shu?) is the common term used to refer to all non-human creatures that are found in legends and fantasy.
Misaki Town (三咲町, Misaki-chō?) is a town in Japan, located on the outskirts of the the Kantō regionWP.[1] It is where the events Tsukihime, Kagetsu Tohya, Melty Blood series, and Mahou Tsukai no Yoru takes place in, and the town also appears in Kara no Kyoukai. In the Tsukihime Remake series, Misaki Town is replaced with Souya. The town is located around the mountains, it was formerly known as Misaki City Misaki town (三咲市三咲町, Misaki-shi Misaki-chō?). It flourished as a post town from the Edo period, and modernization in the town progressed rapidly in the 1980s. It is also known as a commuter town leading towards Misaki city. The town was under the control of the Aozaki clan from several hundred years ago. The land is far from Mage's Association reaches but it is targeted by other mages as it is the last remaining magic source.
The Mystic Eyes are the oldest Magecraft known to humans, deriving from neither ritual nor study. Within the Clock Tower, Mystic Eyes have their own system of ranking,[7] called Noble Color (ノウブルカラー, Nouburukarā?).[25] Normal Mystic Eyes shine red or green, strong ones glow a luminous gold, and Mystic Eyes that fall in the realm of Gods glimmer with multiple colors, like jewels or rainbows.[1] "A Noble Color is like the movement of the stars compared to normal Magic Circuits" is a common saying in the World of Magecraft.[6] Mystic Eyes that directly intervene with the fates of others are classified as being of a Noble Color, and include Compulsion, Contract, Flame, Illusion, Jinx, Petrification, among others.[5][8] Above them, Mystic Eyes ranked Gold or higher often held great Magecrafts that had long since been lost to the modern era.[8] Gold-ranked Mystic Eyes can earn a Sealing Designation with one wrong step,[6] and are possessed by the highest class of Dead Apostles.[25] For Jewel and Rainbow ranks, they are so rare that their very existence is hypothetical and can't even be verified.[6] It is assumed that they don't just possess powerful Magecraft, but instead could actualize Mysteries that were otherwise entirely impossible to replicate in any era. They could even be said to be an exercise of the Authority of the Divine.[8] Medusa's Mystic Eyes of Petrification fall under the classification of Jewel,[25] and it is rumored that one of the Lords at the top of their faction may be hiding some Jewel-ranked Mystic Eyes away.[6] Mystic Eyes of Death Perception are the only known example ranked Rainbow.
The Mystic Eyes of Death Perception (直死の魔眼, Chokushi no Magan?, lit. Magic Eyes of Direct Death) are a type of Mystic Eyes that are considered to be such a rarity that they are thought not to exist at all. Under the Noble Colors System, the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception are designated as Rainbow, the highest level. The Mystic Eyes of Death Perception are considered Divine Spirit class Mystic Eyes. The Mystic Eyes of Death Perception are possessed by Shiki Ryougi, Shiki Tohno (Remake), and Tepeu. Also Michael Roa Valdamjong (Remake) in the body of SHIKI Tohno (Remake) displays a similar ability. The Mystic Eyes of Death Perception can be called a circuit that opens up in the brain and eyes to allow the user to "perceive death," the conceptual "Death of an Existence," as visual signals in the form of Lines of Death (死の線, Shi no Sen?) and Points of Death (死の点, Shi no Ten?).[1][2] Although Shiki Ryougi only sees the Lines of Death, certain Lines act as the Points of Death that Shiki Tohno would see. Their usage is not entirely dependent on the eyes of the user, as they can still "see" lines should they go blind or gouge them out
Those who practice Magic are known as Magicians (魔法使い, Mahōtsukai?).[8] They have control over their own Mysteries, but also practice Magecraft. Kischur Zelretch Schweinorg's Magecraft is at the level where he was given the title Wizard Marshall by the Mage's Association, while Aoko is inferior in skill as a Magus to the lecturers of the Clock Tower. There are many Magi who exceed them in the area of Magecraft, while their Magic is a unique Mystery only available to them. There are also those like Barthomeloi Lorelei, whose Magecraft comes close to the miracles achieved by Magic, and Caubac Alcatraz, who is considered to be "just a step away" from the level of the Magicians.
Aoko Aozaki (蒼崎青子, Aozaki Aoko?) is the first protagonist of Mahou Tsukai no Yoru and a supporting character in the Tsukihime series and Tsukihime Remake series. She is the Magician of the Fifth Magic (第五魔法の魔法使い, Dai Go Mahō no Mahōtsukai?). Aoko is a member of the Aozaki family. When she was young, Aoko's grandfather, the third generation head chose to raise Touko as his successor while Aoko lived with her parents. She is not afraid at all of her grandfather, who is labelled a monster, and only thinks of the great Magus who created the final Magic as "a terrible old man who's lived for too long through questionable means".[11] When she was fifteen years old, Aoko was suddenly named the successor to the Fifth Magic by her grandfather, and her sister Touko Aozaki, who was being trained as the successor until that point, was abandoned. Therefore, she originally had a very bad relationship with her sister. It was later revealed in Mahou Tsukai no Yoru, however, that the true target for Touko's anger was actually her grandfather who closed the Aozaki's path to the Root. Ever since becoming the Aozaki heir, she has lived the life of a rootless wanderer, roaming the world with a single trunk in hand.[1][4] Her meeting with Shiki was merely a coincidence, akin to making friends with a local child in the midst of a long journey.
Unique existences even among the Vampires, the True Ancestors (真祖, Shinso?) are incarnated Nature Spirits, being classified as Elementals,[1][2] said to be the original bloodsucking species independently established by the planet as its sense of touch.[3][2] Elemental royalty,[4] they are Vampiric creatures from birth, however, unlike the Dead Apostles and other blood-sucking species, the root of their bloodlust is psychological rather than physical. Also, because they are part of nature, they can use the power of Marble Phantasm to change the world around them according to their thoughts. They can be classified as a type of greater Fairy and their Foundation is of a Mystery that cannot be reached through Magecraft.[5][2] They are said to be Planet-class Spirits, a rank higher than Divine Spirits.[6] As they receive backup from the planet, it can be said that the limits of their actions are the limits of nature itself.
Vampire (吸血鬼, Kyūketsuki?, Blood-Sucking Demon), also called Bloodsucker (吸血種, Kyūketsu-shu?), is the general term for those who suck the blood of other living creatures.
Dead Apostles (死徒, Shito?) are Humans that became Vampires either by the use of Magecraft (like Van-Fem, though this kind is rare) or by the actions of another Vampire of similar nature (in this case, either a True Ancestor or another Dead Apostle). The Dead Apostles also includes creatures that weren't Vampires from the beginning, such as animals. Among the creatures that fall under the Vampire category, they are the most numerous. The main targets of the Executors of the Burial Agency (Remake), an organization created for the purpose of stopping the spreading of the heresy known as Vampires by exterminating the Dead Apostles and sealing The Twenty-seven Dead Apostle Ancestors (Remake)
Divine Spirit (神霊, Shinrei?) are Gods (神, Kami?) that deteriorated as the Age of Gods came to a close. It is the classification for the highest rank of Nature Spirit.
Spirits (霊, Rei?) are spiritual bodies used by the Planet as a sense of touch, and anything that interferes with them is considered a contradiction. There are several types of Spirits, and despite the fact that they can be found everywhere, only those humans who possess a spiritual affinity can perceive them. Spirits are generally harmless to people, but those of the Elemental class are of such a dimension that they can interact with people by taking a physical form. Presently, science cannot interfere with Spiritual Bodies and modern Magecraft cannot reproduce Mysteries of such scale.
Thaumaturgical System (魔術系統, Majutsu Keitō?) is the general term used to refer to the several modern Schools of Magecraft such as Astrology, Kabbalah, Alchemy, and Shinsendou. Divergences can be found among different Thaumaturgical Systems, but the fundamental basis is “to convert Magical Energy inside the user’s body to transform the external world”. The practitioner acts in accord with the system that each Thaumaturgical System operates under to execute a pre-built program. That “program” is a set of universal rules that interfere with nature once they are enforced. The power that enforces those rules is the Magical Energy of the Magus and the command to do it is made through his Magic Circuits. The greater the interference, the greater will be the amount of Magical Energy consumed.
An Elemental (精霊, Seirei?) is a general category for a variety of Spiritual Bodies (霊体, Reitai?). It is a class of Mystery whose foundations can't be replicated by Magecraft, and a rare number of Phantasmal Species were capable of advancing to becoming Elementals. There are a few types of Elementals: Nature Spirits, Animal Spirits, and the artificially created Guardian Spirits. Lower class Spirits such as Wraiths and Apparitions are not included in this category. Most of these Spirits do not take the shape of a human. Despite being a general category for all sorts of Spirits, the term "Elemental" usually refers to Nature Spirits when used by itself. In this case, the Elementals here acts as part of the Counter Force and exists as the sense of touch for the Planet. The likes of Great Mother/Father-class Fairies such as Morgan le Fay/Vivian, Lugh Beowulf, the True Ancestors, Viy, Tengu such as Kiichi Hougen, Zhenren such as Consort Yu, Divine Spirits (a weakened state of Gods) and other mediators of nature are first and foremost Elementals before being part of any other category. Elementals are "power" granted form using human imagination as a container and they don't need human "faith" in order to exist. Still, even if their shape turns out to be close to that of humans, their values and logic are still unlike those of humans. Fairies that grow to a scale that can be perceived by humans become Elementals. True Ancestors, who are classified as a type of Greater Fairy, fall into the category of an Elemental. Incarnated Elementals like Hinako Akuta are even capable of "dying" and being recorded into the Throne of Heroes, as they can choose how they wish to incarnate themselves. The mediators of nature are capable of using Marble Phantasm[3] and just like Daemons,[4] use Reality Marbles.
Nature Spirits (自然霊, Shizenrei?) — As the name states, a Spirit born from elements of nature such as plants, soil, gemstones, natural phenomena, etc. Ores and jewels that have been beneath the surface for an extended period of time generally carry powerful Nature Spirits. These Spiritual Bodies are formed by the will of the planet earth and they gain energy from nature itself. Only those Nature Spirits, who are wanted by the planet as a defense against the resource-plundering actions of humans, can receive a body made out of flesh from the planet. These supernatural entities are known as the Transcendent Kind, one known member of this category are the True Ancestors who are said to be Planet-class Spirits, a rank higher than Divine Spirits.
Gaia (ガイア?) is the planet's will to survive. Gaia protects all creatures on Earth by using Nature Spirits and creatures of the Earth, but as mankind becomes independent, Gaia increasingly perceives humans as a source of threat due to their reckless destruction of the environment.[12][13] Gaia's response to the human threat is producing beings that can cull or rule mankind. Primate Murder was created to quickly eliminate humans. The True Ancestors are great Faeries modelled after the Crimson Moon, introduced by Gaia to rule over mankind.[12][13] The destruction of the planet by Earth-born creatures is essentially impossible due to measures already put in place by the Counter Force. Even Anti-Planet Noble Phantasms are unable to accomplish this feat.
Ultimate Ones (原初の一アルテミット・ワン, Gensho no IchiArutemitto Wan?, lit. Primordial One (Original One)), known locally by the residents of the Land of Steel as Aristoteles (アリストテレス, Arisutoteresu?) and Types (タイプ, Taipu?), are the strongest existences of a celestial body.[1] The concept of Ultimate Ones is related to Archetypes, but the exact connection is undefined. Ultimate Ones are the ultimate beings from other planets, differing significantly from both creatures of Earth and each other biologically and in appearance. They do not have the same sense of self as humans, nor do they have the concepts of damage or death. They require something above the existence of the common sense of the planet in order to be harmed or destroyed, though the resulting "death" is not necessarily permanent. In the world of Notes, they lack names originally, only given the name of "Aristoteles" by humans, and it is unknown why "Aristoteles" is used, perhaps originating from a scientist of the old age.[2] It is possible for some to acquire the planet's concept of "knowledge" and several were able to contact mankind. Type Venus, as a parasite type being, is capable of such, but ORT (Lostbelt) can only partially simulate the beings of Earth. Each is the strongest lifeform of its planet, essentially the planets themselves, and they each have the power to singlehandedly exterminate all existing lifeforms on Earth. Type Saturn appears to be the leader of those on Earth, as well as the relay point for orders from the respective planets. They do not contend with each other, operating freely without conflict.
Brunestud of the Crimson Moon (朱い月のブリュンスタッド, Akai Tsuki no Buryunsutaddo?), also called Crimson Moon (朱い月, Akai Tsuki?), is the Ultimate One of the Moon (月のアルテミット・ワン, Tsuki no Arutemitto Wan?), otherwise known as Type-Moon (タイプ・ムーン, Taipu Mūn?). Brunestud is the Ultimate One of the Moon, and is thus the strongest life-form on the Moon, capable of singlehandedly wiping out all living beings on Earth.[10] The appearance, abilities and very thoughts of Archetype: Earth could be called the Crimson Moon.[11] After he vanished, individuals close to him in power and purity started being honored with the title of Brunestud.[12] But in the long history of the True Ancestors, only Arcueid (Remake) and Altrouge have ever received the name Brunestud.[6] Arcueid in particular is beyond all other True Ancestors, as she can stand her ground with the first True Ancestor, Crimson Moon.[13] All creatures known as Dead Apostles are descended from him in some way, and as with True Ancestors, he can create strong Dead Apostles by drinking the blood of a human, having created at least two members of The Twenty-seven Dead Apostle Ancestors, Merem and Zelretch, and having had both Blackmore and Ortenrosse become vampires through magical research in order to follow him. Despite the impact the Twenty-seven Ancestors have on the planet, they can be considered nothing more than a footprint that he made on the world.[5] In the Remake, Crimson Moon was noted to have also been responsible for transforming Caubac Alcatraz into a Vampire due to sensing his potential.
The Counter Force (抑止力, Yokushi-ryoku?, "Deterrent Force") is a safety device formed by a World to defend itself against extinction and is synonymous with the World it represents. The concept of Counter Force is central to the World, and there are two types: Gaia and Alaya. Gaia is the will of the Earth, the planet's intrinsic wish to survive and prosper. Alaya, on the other hand, is the collective unconscious will of mankind to avoid extinction.[1] As humans are creatures of Earth, Alaya was a component of Gaia. However, as mankind began to develop independent from nature, it became independent. With this divergence, Alaya is no longer aligned with Gaia and potential conflict can result. Despite being called "the will of the planet/mankind", the Counter Forces bear no emotions.[2] They are described as passive spirals of energy that respond to threats of planet destruction or human extinction. The Counter Forces are always active, constantly steering mankind and the planet away from potential danger. Usually, the Counter Forces act indirectly.[1][3] For instance, Shiki Ryougi was driven by the Counter Force to eliminate the threat that is Souren Araya, while Jeanne d'Arc is believed by Mikiya Kokutou to have possibly been empowered by the Counter Force.[3] One exception to this is Enkidu, who is able to access the Counter Force directly through their Noble Phantasm, Enuma Elish.
Marble Phantasm (空想具現化マーブル・ファンタズム, Kūsō GugenkaMāburu Fantazumu?, Fantasy Manifestation) is the ability possessed by the Nature Spirits that are the Planet's sense of touch, allowing them to reconstruct the world through probability alteration. By connecting their will to the world, they can transfigure it into whatever environment they imagine. However, the same cannot be done with things like humans or animals, which exist independently of the world. Imagination Realization is purely the ability to freely transform one's surroundings.[1][2] The capacity of the actualization is proportional to the scale of the Elemental. The term "Elemental" usually refers to Spirits from nature when used by itself. The spiritual realm isn't a world separated from the real world, but localized regions thought of by the elemental that creates them, such as legendary lands and countries of eternal spring are the products of the imagination of whatever elemental rules over them; hence it is possible for a human to stray into it.[1] When Arcueid uses Marble Phantasm on Roa, she turns layers of the corridor's AtmosphereWP into a vacuum that had cut him like a knife would a radish. Although Roa himself was not affected, there was no way to avoid being chopped in pieces by the atmosphere, and Roa only narrowly managed to remain as just his ankles - Arcueid's imagination didn't go as far as having the floor dislocate.
Arcueid Brunestud (アルクェイド・ブリュンスタッド, Arukweido Buryunsutaddo?) is the princess of the True Ancestors. She is the main heroine of Tsukihime. Arcueid Brunestud is the White Princess of the True Ancestors. The title of Brunestud was given to those True Ancestors capable of manifesting the Millennium Castle Brunestud, and has been likened to be the vampire royal family, although this is not strictly true. The True Ancestors were a race of beings copied from Type-Moon, the ultimate being of the moon, also known as the Crimson Moon. Long ago the will of the planet had no defense mechanism against humanity, nothing to keep them in check. Thus the Crimson Moon came down and offered to help the planet make a race of ultimate beings to rule over humanity, thus resulting in them being the "consciousness of the planet".[5] True Ancestors are alike to occurrences such as earthquakes and typhoons rather than individuals as their actions, while evil and without justification, would come as naturally to her (Arcueid and other True Ancestors) as breathing. However the race was fundamentally flawed, they had a desire to drink blood that their original, the Crimson Moon, had.[6] The True Ancestors needed to use a large portion of their power to suppress this impulse, but as there was no cure, and with passage of time the impulse grew, more and more True Ancestors fell and began drinking blood indiscriminately, while others most likely went into eternal sleep. The True Ancestors didn't have a specific reason in creating Arcueid. They normally only mold new True Ancestors to fit specific needs. There was no need for a being as strong as her, but in the end, she originated from nothingness, simply as a product to realize the pointless goal of "the strongest True Ancestor."[7] They used her great strength to make her into a weapon, the executioner of the fallen True Ancestors and of the most powerful Dead Apostles. According to Ciel, this happened in the 12th century AD, when the number of fallen True Ancestors was very high. She was able to perform this duty splendidly, but she was nothing more than a tool. She was taught nothing beyond what she needed to know to hunt her targets, to the extent that she even ignored the fact that she was the same kind of creature as those she was supposed to destroy, and went to sleep after every kill, with her accumulated memories erased.[8][9] As the executioner, she did not have any vampiric impulses, and the rest of the True Ancestors also believed she had none. A priest from the church seeking perfect immortality, Michael Roa Valdamjong, needed to become a Dead Apostle to continue his research as he had already reached the potential of his human body. Arcueid, ignorant of her nature as a vampire and the consequences of drinking blood, was easily tricked by Roa into drinking his and turned berserk, wiping out most of the True Ancestors, turning Roa into one of the strongest Dead Apostles and having a considerable portion of her power stolen by him, before she managed to regain her sanity long enough to chain herself to the throne and go to sleep. From then on she had to suppress her urge to drink blood like any other True Ancestors. The rest of the True Ancestors were wiped out either by Roa or the rest of the Dead Apostles, who made a game of trying to assassinate their creators. Arcueid finally managed to destroy Roa's original body, although it took an alliance with the Burial Agency to do it. Roa was not killed however, as he had managed to master reincarnation, and constantly reincarnated into host bodies he chose before his deaths. These host bodies were chosen for a mix of social standing (rich families with influence) and the physical/magical potential of the body. After destroying Roa's original body, Arcueid went to sleep and awoke only to kill Roa's re-incarnations constantly, but was never able to destroy him and get her power back as he would simply re-incarnate each time. At the time of Tsukihime, Roa had re-incarnated 17 times, with his last re-incarnation being SHIKI Tohno.
The Mage's Association (魔術協会, Majutsu Kyōkai?) is an international, self-preservative and self-defense organization formed by practitioners of Magecraft for the purpose of controlling, concealing, and developing Magecraft. It is said to transcend nationality and genre of Magecraft, but that is in name only.[1] After having existed for many years, it was decided around the Middle Ages by those who foresaw the decline of Magecraft that in order to preserve their power, Thaumaturgy should drift apart from society and become a secret known only by a necessary minimum number of people. It has many laboratories and research bodies that seek to advance the progress of Thaumaturgy, as well as institutions that transmit their secrets to the next generation.[2] Although the emphasis lies on the pursuit of knowledge, the Association also seeks to increase its own military strength and reserves the use of force to protect itself from entities that threaten its existence, such as the Holy Church, other mage organizations, supernatural forces seeking to punish mankind for meddling with areas that should not be touched, and individuals who hunt that which they consider taboo.
The Holy Grail War (聖杯戦争, Seihai Sensō?) is a competition that decides the ownership of the Holy Grail through intense battle royale. While there have been many conflicts over supposed Holy Grails in the past, this term refers to those specifically based around Masters, usually proficient Magi, summoning Servants, Heroic Spirits brought forth as Familiars, and meeting in battle until only one pair is left to claim the Holy Grail.
There is also the case of the Demon Lords (魔王, Maō?, Devil), fallen True Ancestors who succumbed to their blood thirst and became a threat both to humans and the True Ancestors themselves.[1] As they no longer needed to suppress their thirst, they could employ their powers to their full extent and therefore vastly overwhelm their still restrained kin. It was with the purpose of their elimination that the True Ancestors caused the birth of Arcueid Brunestud (Remake). In the original Tsukihime, all of them had long been eliminated before the events of the story, though in the Tsukihime Remake series, at least one Demon Lord survived into the recent past and was nonlethally pacified by Mario Gallo Bestino.[14] It should be noted that despite the name, they are not to be confused neither with the demonic ethereal beings born from human belief, nor with the oriental demons of Japanese folklore known as Oni.
Brunestud (ブリュンスタッド?) is a title bestowed upon all True Ancestor royalty who come close in power to Brunestud of the Crimson Moon by displaying the ability to manifest his Millennium Castle Brunestud through Marble Phantasm. While the True Ancestors have no proper concept of hierarchy, those able to manifest the castle have been uplifted as royalty. The only current two True Ancestors to have ever held the name in the entire long history of the race are Arcueid Brunestud (Remake), the White Princess of the True Ancestors, and Altrouge Brunestud, the Eclipse Princess of Black Blood.[15][16] The True Ancestor royalty can also enter a state called Rapid Expansion (急膨張, Kyū Bōchō?) (Inflation (インフレーション, Infurēshon?)), a phenomenon more simply called Luminous Body (光体, Kōtai?) or Luminary (光体, Kōtai?).
Master (マスター, Masutā?) is a designation given to an individual, usually a Magus, who has become one of the formal participants of the Holy Grail War by obtaining Command Spells and forming a contract with a Servant.
Familiars (使い魔, Tsukaima?) are special assistants used by the Magi. Since it's natural for a Magus to separate himself from society, the use of Familiars capable of performing small, simple errands is considered orthodox. Although a different entity, Familiars are seen as an extension of the Magus as there is both a mental and physical connection between the two. The symbol of the Magus itself and fundamentally different from creatures like the Daemons or Spirits who are summoned and then bound by a contract.
Heroic Spirits (英霊, Eirei?, localized as "Legendary Souls") are Spirits of heroes who achieved great deeds in life, having become objects of worship after their deaths. Heroic Spirits are beings of a higher existence, becoming categorically closer to Elementals than Wraiths. Differing from how Elementals are "power" granted form using human imagination as a container, they are entirely woven from the ideals of people all throughout.[1] They are freed from the constraints of time itself and removed from the ring of reincarnation, moved to the Throne of Heroes (英霊の座, Eirei no Za?), a place existing outside of both the World and the time axis.[2] The Throne of Heroes is also occasionally referred to as the Ring of Deterrence (抑止の輪, Yokushi no Wa?), referring to how it is mainly used by the Counter Force. Those that become closer to the Planet do not mix well with people, so they fall into the categories of Divine Spirits and Elementals.
Servants (サーヴァント, Sāvanto?) are Spirits summoned by the Holy Grail for the purpose of competing under Masters in the Holy Grail War. Servants are Spirits made into special Familiars of the highest rank, referred to as Ghost Liners by the Mage's Association, that are bound to the Master. Typically Heroic Spirits under most systems, they can also sometimes be Divine Spirits, Phantoms, Wraiths, and living people depending on various circumstances. Pure Heroic Spirits, the "main body" in the Throne of Heroes, can only be summoned by the World, and summoning even one is considered to be a miraculous occurrence. Differing from the normal definition of Familiars that can be likened to minor mascots unable to be stronger than their masters, Heroic Spirits are the most powerful of beings with which even the five Magicians would never be able to forge a contract with. Rather than it being a hard process to summon them or the fact that they far surpass Magi, it is their intrinsic nature in that they are beings beyond Magecraft. The Class Name (クラス名, Kurasu-mei?) of a Servant is the name by which they are referred in a Holy Grail War. Corresponding to their Class, the Master will typically refer to them only by that name to avoid exposing their True Name. Heroic Spirits will most often take the form that represents their golden age at the prime of their lives, but effects like those of a strong curse or a personal attachment to the form can change that to even their selves from just before death.[16] Certain wounds, conditions, and illnesses may remain should they be "something indispensable" for their origin, such as Nero Claudius's migraines as the Skill Migraine,[17] Okita Souji's tuberculosis as the Skill Weak Constitution,[18] and Beni-enma's severed tongue.
They are freed from the constraints of time itself and removed from the ring of reincarnation, moved to the Throne of Heroes (英霊の座, Eirei no Za?), a place existing outside of both the World and the time axis.[2] The Throne of Heroes is also occasionally referred to as the Ring of Deterrence (抑止の輪, Yokushi no Wa?), referring to how it is mainly used by the Counter Force. Those that become closer to the Planet do not mix well with people, so they fall into the categories of Divine Spirits and Elementals.
Holy Grails (聖杯ホーリーグレイル, SeihaiHōrīgureiru?) are wish-granters using the foundation of the Christian holy relic that received the blood of Christ. There have been many artifacts claimed to be the genuine article, at least 726 of which were investigated by the Holy Church,[1][2] and many conflicts for such artifacts have happened around the world throughout history.[1] The name is utilized in the various Holy Grail Wars as the name of an artifact purportedly capable of granting any wish to whomever comes to claim it, rather than the real artifact, though the Church often gets involved simply because of that reason. Its advent is the ultimate goal of the various Holy Grail Wars. Each Holy Grail is in effect a mass of pure Magical Energy, which reacts to the wishes of the one who holds it in order to grant them; however, on their own they are not capable of generating true miracles without outside intervention. Left alone, they enter a purely reactive state, although they can spontaneously summon Servants as a defense mechanism should they be placed in abnormal situations like those encountered in the Grand Orders. As a rule, they do not take a physical form but can manifest in a variety of shapes depending on the circumstances of their formation.
The Command Spells (令呪, Reiju?, also translated as "Command Seals") are three claims of absolute obedience, the crystallization of a great magic, that a Master has over a Servant in the Holy Grail War system. Unable to normally be controlled by humans, they are burdened by the "absolute condition for materialization", the authority of the Command Spell carved into them at the moment of summoning.[1] They are holy marks signifying a Magi's status as a Master, a system that was created by Zouken Makiri after the failure of the First Holy Grail War.[2] Only known to the Three Founding Families and Supervisor, their truest purpose is to allow the winner of the Holy Grail to force the Servant to kill themselves so that the ritual to reach the Root with all seven Heroic Spirits can be completed.
The term Three Founding Families (始まりの御三家, Hajimari no Gosanke?) refers to the three Magus families who created a Holy Grail War system. There are two different sets of families for two different Holy Grail Wars. In Fate/stay night, the three families are the Einzbern, Makiri, and Tohsaka.[1][2] The Einzberns specialize in 'the golden rule of the Rhine', and thus were the best suited to make an imitation of the Holy Grail.[1] The Tohsaka provided a suitable land,[1] the technique to bore a hole into the World,[2] and Nagato Tohsaka was an expert in summoning,[1] while the Makiri were the most skilled with Familiars and provided the strong curse that would become the Command Spells to bind the Servants.[1] As a result, they are families whose members have a higher likelihood of being chosen as Masters.
Noble Phantasms (貴い幻想ノウブル・ファンタズム, Tattoi GensōNouburu Fantazumu?), or simply Precious/Treasured Tools (宝具, Hōgu?) in the Japanese version, are "crystallized Mysteries", powerful armaments made using human imagination as their core, and are the weapons and/or abilities owned by Heroic Spirits. As humanity's illusions, they embody the ultimate Mysteries of a hero as symbols of their existence through historical fact and anecdotes. They can be physical weaponry (e.g. swords, spears, bows) or support items (e.g. shields, rings, crowns).[1] They can also be abstractions such as unique, often magical abilities (even close to or matching True Magic), unique (even conceptual) means of attack, curses, and changes to the very environment and its physical properties. When summoned as Servants in the Holy Grail War, they are the trump cards of the heroes that allow them to overcome others in battle.
Also known as Ether (エーテル, Ēteru?), it is one of the Five Great Elements. Ether is also called the Fifth Imaginary Factor (第五架空要素, Daigo Kakū Yōso?) according to the teachings of the Mage’s Association. It combines itself with any of the other four Elements in order to actualize the Mysteries of Thaumaturgy.[31] Ether is the artificial Magical Energy that forms the basis of modern Magecraft, although it did not exist during the Age of Gods.[32] Although amorphous and incapable of materializing by its own power, it is what allows Spirits to take a material form. Paracelsus assigned a black-purple color to it following Tattva.[28] The Ether Elemental Affinity is exceedingly rare, and in the hands of a high-ranking Magus can be used to interfere with the cornerstone of Magecraft, the Fifth Imaginary Factor Ether itself, and dismantle the Magecraft of another Magus. When combined with Earth, the essence of gemstones, any other elements can be extracted from jewels.[
While the Summoning Rituals (儀式の召喚, Gishiki no Shōkan?) are generally specific, their main goal in the Holy Grail War system is to act as a precaution to create a bond with a perfect, reliable Servant. They really only require a summoning circle, even if unskilled: a ring of purification carved around a ring of four purging circles, surrounding a ward of summoning.[11] Catalysts can bypass the need of chanting a spell, but doing so can create aberrations like Gilles de Rais being placed into a normally unsuitable class,[91][92] or King Arthur having a bad connection with her Master that does not allow her to receive Magical Energy through normal methods.[35] Flat Escardos is a complete anomaly in that he is able to complete the ritual without even meaning to summon a Servant, simply by "fiddling" with the Magical Energy in the area. The connection to his Servant is spontaneously established, and it is unknown if it can be called a miracle, luck, or an achievement of his own latent potential.[67] It is possible to specify in the Summoning Ritual that the Servant be placed under the Berserker class for those familiar with the workings of the Holy Grail System. By adding in a specific line, Zouken Matou and the Einzbern family, as members of the Three Founding Families, were able to choose this class during the Fourth Holy Grail War and Fifth Holy Grail War respectively.[89][93] In the Great Holy Grail War, each faction has a Summoning Ritual according to the color they represent.
Catalysts (触媒, Shokubai?) are symbols and holy relics used to attract the desired Heroic Spirit. Requiring something with a connection to the hero, it can be anything from a sword, armor, a talisman, or even their bones. While something like Rin's Pendant is an artifact holding great power on its own, it is unable to help summon a Servant. If the catalyst is one that is particularly weak, or if it is one with a connection to many different Heroic Spirits, the Heroic Spirit among the candidates that has good affinity with the Master will be chosen.[87] Some are those that have only been connected to a single Heroic Spirit, allowing them to be brought forth regardless of affinity with the Master. In a rare case, EMIYA's catalyst is not the pendant Rin Tohsaka owns in the present. EMIYA is instead a case where he holds a catalyst with a connection to his summoner.
The Burial Agency (埋葬機関, Maisō Kikan?) is a group of special Inquisitors gathered by the Church in the Tsukihime Remake series. The director manages seven primary agents allowed free action by an archbishop.
Ciel (シエル, Shieru?) is the seventh member of the Burial Agency of the Holy Church. Formerly an incarnation of Michael Roa Valdamjong, she goes undercover at Souya's high school, acting as Shiki Tohno's senior. She is one of the six heroines of Tsukihime -A piece of blue glass moon-, Tsukihime -The other side of red garden-, and the Tsukihime Remake series. Ciel is a member of the Burial Agency, special Executors meant for the slaying of Dead Apostles, as a failed saint that rivals a whole Assembly of the Eighth Sacrament.[5] She became an Executor at the age of only 13 due to her unique form of immortality and knowledge obtained from Roa, and has been one for the past six years.[5] Noel calls her a monster, who has a body more immortal than any vampire.[5] Her body has extremely high physical and magical potential,[3] allowing her to jump to and from the tops of lamp posts, leap from buildings and between rooftops, run on the sides of walls at high speeds, and carry a person at full sprint without breaking a sweat. Red Arcueid in her Luminary form states that Ciel's body's capabilities is the pinnacle of human potential, after seeing that Powered Ciel had the mental strength to maintain her mind against her Mystic Eyes.[11] Ciel is a master of disguise, being able to play both the parts of an upper high school student and an Executor. All the more impressively, she can inherit differing personalities traits of each role distinctively.
Since they are the oldest form of Magecraft known to mankind, Mystic Eyes are extremely primitive when thought of as a form of Magecraft, as, although they are a powerful Mystery, a number of counter-measures against them have been developed around the world.[15] It is possible to suppress the power of Mystic Eyes with a Mystic Code called Mystic Eye Killers (魔眼殺し, Magan Goroshi?). They are commonly made into glasses because Mystic Eyes are a power derived from the oculus. They are able to block more unique ones like Death Perception and Petrification, allowing someone to live a normal life without affecting themselves and those around them with the abilities of their eyes. Those of Shiki Tohno prove to be not enough for his Mystic Eyes on occasion, causing him to see death even when wearing them.[16] Mystic Eyes Killers can also protect their wearer from others' Mystic Eyes if their power relies on eye contact, such as Lord El-Melloi II wearing some to defend himself from Faker's Mystic Eyes of Compulsion.
The concept of a Reality Marble (固有結界リアリティ・マーブル, Koyū KekkaiRiariti Māburu?, Innate Bounded Field) is one that centres around the materialization and projection of one's inner world onto reality following the Thaumaturgical Theory World Egg (世界卵, Sekai Tamago?).[1] Originally, it was an ability specifically had by Daemons as their Alien Common Sense (異界常識, Ikai Jōshiki?), but has since come to include the unique Bounded Fields possessed by many people,[2][3] such as The Twenty-seven Dead Apostle Ancestors (Remake) and the greatest of Magi who have made this ability available to use through a long time.[2] As such, Reality Marbles represent the pinnacle of all Bounded Fields where the boundary line becomes the space itself.
A Bounded Field (結界, Kekkai?, lit. "Fixed Boundary" or "Barrier") is a geographical form of Magecraft whereby one knits a boundary line of Magical Energy around a space to separate its inside from the outside, cutting off and isolating that space from the outside world[1][2][3][4][5] and then imposing an effect on the inside (or the boundary line itself).[1][2] It is primarily used to protect one's body or property.
The Millennium Castle Brunestud (千年城ブリュンスタッド, Sennenjō Buryunsutaddo?), originally the lair from Crimson Moon Brunestud and a piece of his Reality Marble[8] in the mountains, is currently reproduced by Arcueid's use of Marble Phantasm that she calls home.[1] The original master of Millennium Castle has already been annihilated, but since then, those True Ancestors that were able to form it, through their Marble Phantasm ability, were given the title of Brunestud and treated as royalty. True Ancestors, beings that have no concept of social stratification, call Arcueid the princess for this reason. It is existing in the location closest to the moon, not topographically, but where the world receives the most influence of the moon. It is the castle Arcueid sealed herself into, depicted as chaining herself to the throne, after getting tricked into drinking blood by Roa and killing other True Ancestors.[8] Even without Arcueid around, the castle is still seemingly in existence, but without "life". To the True Ancestors, the castle was probably their absolute protection. Moreover, the reason why the Millennium Castle suddenly appeared in the city of Souya in the Ciel route is simply because its True Ancestor lord (Arcueid) willed it into existence.[2] The Witch Swift Umbrella in the World of Notes. is said to be the "original form" of the Millenium Castle Brunestud.
Skills are the embodiment of a Servant's various abilities and characteristics. They are divided into two main categories: Class Skills, which are typically connected to the Servant's Class, and Personal Skills, which reflect abilities or anecdotes connected to the life and legend of the Servant themselves. Certain Skills, such as Divinity, have been treated as both Class and Personal Skills depending on the work and occasionally between different materials for the same work.
Speed Blitz is the act of one attacking their opponent before they are capable of perceiving or reacting to them. Blitzing is different than outpacing, where a character is simply faster than the other. A blitz is more like an all-around outclassing in speed.
Michael Roa Valdamjong (ミハイル・ロア・バルダムヨォン, Mihairu Roa Barudamuyōn?) is the main antagonist of the Near-Side Moon routes of Tsukihime. He is a vampire and a numberless Dead Apostle Ancestor ranked as "Extra" outside of the regular twenty-seven because they consider him to be a heretic who does not uphold the ideals of regular vampires. He is called The Serpent of Akasha (アカシャの蛇, Akasha no Hebi?) and The Infinite Reincarnator (転生無限者, Tensei Mugensha?), which refers to his ability to constantly reincarnate after entering Akasha, the root of everything within the universe, no matter how many times he dies. His seventeenth incarnation is known as Elesia (エレイシア, Ereishia?), and his eighteenth incarnation, SHIKI Tohno (遠野 四季, Tōno Shiki?), is his latest as of the time period of Tsukihime. Roa reached his peak as a human, so he sought to become a Dead Apostle to complete his magical theory, the thesis on immortality, and obtain Magic.[15] Normally, the process to become a vampire would have taken at least one hundred years starting from the level of a Ghoul, but Roa wished to greatly speed up that process. When becoming a Dead Apostle by having a True Ancestor suck their blood, the power of the Dead Apostle raises in proportion to the True Ancestor's strength. He used the strongest True Ancestor, Arcueid Brunestud, in order to instantly become the strongest Dead Apostle by skipping the stages of growth with her immense power, and planned to rise to the top of the hierarchy in just ten years. Upon having her take his blood, he stole a large amount of her power, and managed to reach the apex of his magical abilities as he built up his power. Taking the place of a Dead Apostle Ancestor sealed by the Church, he gained their followers and rose in power among the twenty-seven, and managed to defeat Altrouge Brunestud in battle. He was eventually destroyed by Arcueid who had joined forces with the Church, but he had already managed to establish his system of reincarnation. While he is considered as an Ancestor by the Church, and Arcueid considers them to be a group of twenty-eight rather than twenty-seven, he is listed as "Extra" outside of the regular twenty-seven because they consider him to be a heretic who does not uphold the ideals of regular vampires.
King's Treasure Gate of Babylon Rank: E~A++ Type: Anti-Personnel Noble Phantasm The golden king's treasure trove and the key sword connected to it contains the origin of many Noble Phantasms, perhaps being a model for humanity's inventions and the treasures of the East and West. Naturally, it is possible to freely draw them out. However, whether one can handle them depends on the skill of the user. When GoB is deployed, a small warehouse entrance appears like a portal amidst golden waves. This entrance allows one to draw out desired tools, and the force ejected from the warehouse is so significant that it can be used to launch weapons like arrows or cannons. As Gilgamesh's primary weapon, its common use is to eject stored weapons. The power increases depending on the quality of the weapon. Given Gilgamesh's characteristics as a heroic spirit, it is only natural that he possesses high-ranked weapons, making each shot a decisive attack. If evaluated solely based on firepower, it would be equivalent to that of 5+ Servants. The number of gates also significantly contributes to its power with tens to hundreds of gates at any given time. With such traits, this power is more prominent in large-scale warfare than in one-on-one battles.
Enkidu: Chains of Heaven (天の鎖エルキドゥ, Ten no KusariErukidu?) is the Noble Phantasm most trusted by Gilgamesh, even more so than Ea, and the "greatest secret" stored in the Gate of Babylon. It is a chain named after his closest friend, and is able to bind the gods so they cannot escape, making it one of the few Anti-Divine weapons that holds the concept of "reigning over the gods." The strength and durability of the chain grows stronger with the target having higher Divinity, but is no more than a tough chain to a target without Divinity. When used against a regular human like Shirou Emiya, he feels he has no chance of prying it off of him. Divine targets are completely held in place, allowing him to bind the "Bull of Heaven" that brought seven years of famine in Uruk.
Sword of Rupture, Ea (乖離剣・エア, Kairi-ken - Ea?) is the most powerful Noble Phantasm contained in the Gate of Babylon and the pinnacle of all those used by Servants. Unlike all of his other nameless weapons that were able to be passed on to other wielders throughout history, it is a sword only Gilgamesh possesses, a unique existence that can only be possessed by him, that is suited only for a ruler's use and makes him transcendent. The "blade" itself and the tip of the sword, spun in a spiral shape, are dull. It has the shape of a cylindrical, drill-shaped pillar made up of three independently rotating segments engraved with crimson cuneiform lettering that spin slowly in an alternating direction like querns, the middle segment spinning clockwise and the top and bottom segments spinning counterclockwise. Unlike most other Noble Phantasms, the ability of the sword has its unique name instead of simply chanting "Ea" to use its function as a Noble Phantasm. The attack, Enuma Elish: The Star of Creation That Split Heaven and Earth (天地乖離す開闢の星エヌマ・エリシュ, Tenchi Kairisu Kaibyaku no HoshiEnuma Erishu?), signifies the overloaded state under which it releases its maximum output.
Sha Naqba Imuru: The Omniscient Omnipotent Star (全知なるや全能の星シャ・ナクパ・イルム, Zenchinaru ya Zen'nō no HoshiSha Nakupa Irumu?) is the mentality of Gilgamesh sublimated into a Noble Phantasm, said to have "spread across all corners of the world as if the brilliance of the stars, seeing through all creation." It is a "continuously active-type Noble Phantasm" that does not require its name to be invoked, but it is assumed that Gilgamesh keeps it intentionally restrained. Possessing tremendous efficiency, it can discern heavily concealed truths with a single glance, from that of the opponent's True Name and Noble Phantasms to possibly even seeing through a piece of the truth of the demise of human history. Upon releasing its True Name, it will work as a form of "instruction" for him to guide others with the most optimal tactics. It can also see the possibilities of various parallel worlds .
Magical Energy is a natural energy source found in Magi and the world, essential for executing Magecraft. It is seen as the primordial essence of life, akin to gasoline for spells. There are two main types: Mana, which comes from the atmosphere, and Od, which originates from human Magi. While both types are similar in quality, there is significantly more Mana available than Od. The Holy Church, due to its conflict with the Mage’s Association, refers to this energy as "Prayer Power," avoiding the terminology favored by Magi.
Magic Circuits are a pseudo-nervous system within a human body that designates an individual as a Magus. They serve two main purposes: converting Life Force into Magical Energy and providing access to Thaumaturgical Foundations, or Greater Magic Formulae. Additionally, they connect the material world to the astral plane. To perform Mysteries, a Magus sends commands and Magical Energy through their Magic Circuits to activate specific Magic Formulae within the Thaumaturgical Foundation, similar to operating a computer program.
Humans who are born with Magic Circuits are qualified to be a Magus. Magus is the term for a human practitioner of Magecraft, the magical science, as opposed to a Magician, who is capable of bringing forth true miracles that are impossible to be reenacted at the current scientific stage.
Mixed-Bloods are the offspring of humans and Phantasmal Species or Demons, resulting in individuals with unique "inhuman" traits. Although their hybrid nature weakens with each generation, some children retain strong inherited abilities that defy physical laws, rooted in folklore and fantastical tales. Examples include hybrids from the Oni Kind, like the Tohno and Kishima clans, as well as half-incubus Merlin and the descendant of succubi, Natalia Kaminski. Additionally, there are those with Dragon lineage, such as Elizabeth Báthory. In Japan, Mixed-Bloods are often viewed as distortions that must be eliminated, posing challenges for Demon Hunters, as they are immune to certain supernatural restraints and possess powers beyond those of ordinary humans.
Magecraft is the artificial reenactment of Mystery, allowing humans to use supernatural means to achieve results typically possible through science. While it evolves and adapts, it cannot create new Mysteries due to a conceptual barrier known as the "wall." True Magic exists beyond this wall. Modern Magecraft is less potent than that from the Age of Gods, where practitioners accessed Magical Energy directly. The difference stems from civilizations: the Age of Gods coexisted with Truth, while the Age of Man searches for it.
The Age of Gods spans from Earth's formation 4.5 billion years ago to the start of the Common Era around 1 AD, characterized by a reality governed by Mystery rather than physics. During this period, Phantasmal Species flourished, and gods actively interacted with mortals, marking an era of heroes and mythology where the fundamental laws of reality differed from today. This age transitioned to the Age of Man due to three significant events, beginning with the invasion of Sefar around 12,000 BC, which devastated 80% of the Earth's surface and killed many gods, including Amaterasu and the Twelve Machine Gods. The gods' influence waned, leading to a loss of physical forms, forcing them to inhabit compatible humans. The decline of divine power coincided with the rise of humanity. The Authority Potnia Theron, symbolizing the power of all creation, emerged from a forgotten goddess around 6,000 BC and was passed down to various Earth Mother Goddesses, including Tiamat and Gaia.
Aoko Aozaki is a unique Magician who wields the Fifth Magic (Magic Blue), giving her the ability to perform its miracles, including localized time travel. She will only use Fifth Magic as a last resort. Upon the activation of "Fifth Magic", A huge magic circle will appear under her and she will transform, becoming a "completed" version of herself from ten years in the future, where she is older, more mature, and her hair will turn "red" Aoko Aozaki will only fight using her raw strength, throwing punches and kicks, along with mana bullets. After utilizing the power of the Fifth Magic, her mana bullets receive a significant upgrade, making them much stronger with a larger area of effect Although time travel is also achievable through the Second Magic, Aoko's use of the Fifth Magic suggests a deeper and more complex nature than mere time manipulation Furthermore, elements of the Fifth Magic are hinted at in Ars Almadel Salomonis, and Aoko is aware of Zelretch and the Second Magic, recognizing Neco-Arc as his creation.
As a member of the Aozaki family and the Magician of the Fifth Magic, Aozaki Aoko was unexpectedly named the heir to this title by her grandfather when she was fifteen, despite her sister, Touko, being trained as the successor up until that point. This led to a strained relationship between the sisters, though it was later revealed that Touko's true anger was directed at their grandfather for obstructing their path to the Root. Having become the Aozaki heir, Aoko lives as a rootless wanderer, carrying only a single trunk with her as she travels the world. Her encounter with Shiki is described as a chance meeting, similar to befriending a local child during her journey.
Phantasmal Species is the common term used to refer to all non-human creatures that are found in legends and fantasy.
Divine Spirits are deities that have diminished in power as the Age of Gods ended. They represent the highest rank of Nature Spirits.
The Counter Force is a protective mechanism created by the World to safeguard against extinction and is linked to the concept of the World itself. It consists of two types: Gaia, the Earth's innate desire to survive and thrive, and Alaya, the collective unconscious will of humanity to prevent extinction. Initially part of Gaia, Alaya became independent as humanity evolved, leading to potential conflicts between the two. Counter Forces are emotionless energy responses that act passively to protect both the planet and humanity from threats. They operate mostly through indirect means, guiding humanity away from danger. Examples include Shiki Ryougi, who was compelled by the Counter Force to eliminate threats, and Jeanne d'Arc, who may have been empowered by it. Enkidu is a notable exception, as they can directly access the Counter Force through their Noble Phantasm, Enuma Elish.
Heroic Spirits or "Legendary Souls," are the spirits of heroes who performed significant deeds in life and became objects of worship after death. They are considered higher beings, more akin to Elementals than Wraiths, as they embody ideals rather than merely being powers shaped by human imagination. Heroic Spirits exist outside the constraints of time and the cycle of reincarnation, residing in the Throne of Heroes, which exists beyond both the World and the time axis. This Throne is also known as the Ring of Deterrence due to its association with the Counter Force. Those who grow closer to the Planet tend not to interact well with humans, often categorized as Divine Spirits or Elementals.
Noble Phantasms, or Precious/Treasured Tools, are powerful weapons and abilities owned by Heroic Spirits, described as "crystallized Mysteries." They are born from human imagination and represent the ultimate Mysteries of a hero, encapsulating their historical significance and anecdotes. Noble Phantasms can take the form of physical weapons (like swords and spears) or support items (such as shields and crowns). They may also manifest as magical abilities, unique attacks, curses, or alterations to the environment and its properties. When summoned as Servants in the Holy Grail War, they serve as the heroes' trump cards, enabling them to prevail in battle.
The term "Three Founding Families" refers to the three Magus families that established the Holy Grail War system. these families are the Einzbern, Makiri, and Tohsaka. The Einzberns are adept at "the golden rule of the Rhine" and excelled in creating an imitation of the Holy Grail. The Tohsakas contributed suitable land and the technique to access the World, with Nagato Tohsaka being a summoning expert. The Makiri were skilled with Familiars and provided the commanding curse that became Command Spells to bind the Servants. Members of these families have a higher probability of being selected as Masters in the Holy Grail War.
Scáthach is a female warrior-queen from Celtic Mythology's Ulster Cycle, serving as the gatekeeper of the "Land of Shadows" She is highly skilled in spearmanship and Rune magecraft, possessing the power to control and close the gate to this realm filled with ghosts. Scáthach is known for being the mentor of Cú Chulainn, who became the hero of Ulster, and she taught him various techniques, including gifting him his favorite magic spear. She also trained his son, Connla. Over time, Scáthach ceased to be human and became disconnected from the world, unable to die. Known for her monstrous strength, she was sought after as a mentor. At the age of sixteen, Cú Chulainn came to the Land of Shadows seeking fame, where Scáthach guided him in the "secrets of leaping," taught him runic magecraft, and gifted him the demonic spear Gáe Bolg. . Scáthach's nature caused the Land of Shadows to become entirely separated from the mortal world, transforming into a realm of the dead. Existing in this state for two thousand years and unable to become a Heroic Spirit, she has not left the Land of Shadows. With her immortality, she can only await the eventual disappearance of the World and everything beyond it.
A Reality Marble is a concept that involves projecting one's inner world into reality, based on the Thaumaturgical Theory of the World Egg. Initially, this ability belonged to Daemons as their Alien Common Sense, but it has expanded to include unique Bounded Fields created by various individuals, such as the Twenty-seven Dead Apostle Ancestors and highly skilled Magi. Reality Marbles are considered the highest form of Bounded Fields, where the boundary itself transforms into physical space.
