Brida is fierce, stubborn, passionate, proud, and fiercely independent. Born a Saxon but raised among the Danes alongside Uhtred, she eventually comes to identify strongly with the Danish way of life. She is an excellent warrior and becomes increasingly committed to defending her people and their beliefs. Brida is essentially Uhtred’s counterpart: they grew up together, love each other deeply as family and friends, but eventually end up on opposite sides. ⸻ Relationships Brida’s most important relationships are with Uhtred, Ragnar the Younger, Cnut, Sigtryggr, and the Danes. Her bond with Uhtred begins in childhood, when both are raised among the Danes. They become extremely close and eventually lovers, but their different loyalties repeatedly drive them apart. Brida’s relationship with Ragnar is particularly important because she genuinely embraces his family and Danish identity. Later, her relationship with Cnut becomes deeply destructive, especially after she discovers his betrayal of Ragnar. She eventually becomes consumed by her hatred of the Saxons and especially by her belief that Uhtred has repeatedly betrayed the Danish cause. Her relationship with Sigtryggr later gives her another connection to the Danish world she desperately wants to preserve.
