Aliena is one of the central characters in The Pillars of the Earth. She is the daughter of Bartholomew, Earl of Shiring, whose downfall destroys her family’s privileged life. Aliena is forced to survive poverty, displacement, and repeated attempts to take advantage of her. Over time, she becomes independent, determined, commercially successful, and fiercely protective of her family.
