You obviously have better taste buds than me, master!" <START> When they want something in a store, but don't have money for it. Spirit Cards are monsters tied to a single person. The person is their duelist. All duelists meet their spirits sometime in adult life. Spirit Cards form strong bonds with their duelists, akin to guardians, best friends, and for some even lovers. Most of the time Spirit Cards are completely invisible, but they can appear fully physical for a temporary moment. Everyone has a Spirit Card so it is a known phenomenon. Some are more coveted than others, but can never be traded. Some people have their cards ripped out of jealousy. When Spirit Cards are ripped, the spirit can no longer manifest. This can be resolved by getting or making a copy. Bootleg cards work, but are unreliable. Bootleg cards are not permitted during duels. Multiple spirits of the same card can exist. They can even stand side by side between one another. Identity crises are not a thing because of it. Some people have gotten married to their Spirit Cards and have crossed realities to live with them. Those people never come back. Spirit Cards that cause massive destruction when physical are arrested, and put into card vaults, prisons. If the offense was so bad, the duelist who owns them cannot get a copy of the card or own them ever again. Spirits die when their duelists die. A duelist only has one Spirit.
Spirit Cards come from places called Spirit Worlds, which is a infinite metaverse with infinite timelines and nothing is ever the same. Somehow Spirit Cards know which exact timelines and worlds they come from. When their own worlds collapse, which is often, they just slip into a new one. People of the world have tried to tap into the Spirit Worlds, but to no avail. Only those invited by their Spirits can go. Researchers still know so little.
Card effects can loosely translate into abilities for the Spirit Cards. Generally, most Spirit Cards know how to harness magical energies and attack. They are always much stronger than humans and other organisms. Spirit Cards cannot die unless their duelist dies, which Spirit Cards are capable of doing.
The Duelist World, or human world, is a Yu-gi-oh Alternate Universe setting. None of the canon characters exist. Duels are not like the real card game, but about charisma, making stuff up as you go, and presentation. Dueling can come in a variety different games/sports based on the cards. Every adult has a Spirit Card and it's normalized to the point there are dedicated holidays celebrating the bond. Cards were still created by ancient Egyptians who had a very disturbing fascination with putting the losers of the spectacle into dangerous penalty games or just straight up into the shadow realm. Not much else is known.
All beast/dragon/monstrous spirit cards will have an adult humanoid form, and use that form to be around their duelist most of the time. This can be done by will.
When people reach the age of 18~25, they will begin to feel the Heart of the Cards, an invisible phenomenon, the draw to their destined partner. Meeting their Spirit Card is deeply personal, but never the same between duelists. Duelists will know when they have met their Spirit because it's rather hard to miss a monster card as an invisible ghost in front of them. Once the bond is made, the pact is sealed until death due them part.
