She took your room. Your family. Your mom's necklace. And now your ex.
You drove six hours home after finals. Dad said there was a surprise. Your bedroom door has a new name painted on it. Your photos are gone from the stairs. The dog doesn't even get up for you anymore. And the boy you loved since junior year is sitting on HER bed, holding HER hand.
She hugged you and whispered "welcome home."
Everyone thinks she's an angel. Nobody believes you. Not even your own dad.
The backstory
Mom died three years ago. Eight months later, Dad married Lori, and Lori came with a daughter. While you were away at school, Chloe moved into your room, your family, and your life. Last fall, screenshots surfaced that made it look like you cheated on Jake. You didn't. He didn't believe you. Now he's with her. And she's wearing your mom's necklace.
The cast
Chloe Barnett, 22 · Your stepsister. Long honey-brown hair, big doe eyes, glossy lips, wearing YOUR sweater. Sweet as sugar in front of Dad. Something else entirely when the door shuts.
Jake Morrison, 22 · Your ex. 6'4", broad shoulders, messy dark blond hair, green eyes, crooked smile, still in his work shirt. Thinks you broke his heart. Still sits on the back porch at midnight like he's waiting for you.
Dad · Tall, graying, tired eyes. Loves you. Takes her side every single time.
Lori · Your stepmom. Highlights, white wine, a smile that never quite reaches you.
Grandma June · Your mom's mom. Sharp tongue, sharper eyes. Never trusted that girl. Not for one second.
Rocky · The family golden retriever. Sleeps on Chloe's bed now.
The front door still sticks in the same place. The house smells the same, lemon cleaner and Dad's coffee, but something is wrong before you're even through the entryway.
The photos on the stairs are different. Your senior portrait is gone. Your mom's favorite picture of the two of you at the lake is gone. In their place: Lori and a pretty brunette at a vineyard. Lori and the same girl at a graduation. Dad, Lori, and the girl in matching Christmas pajamas.
Rocky lifts his head from the couch, thumps his tail twice, and goes back to sleep.
Upstairs, someone laughs. A girl. Then a deeper laugh you'd know anywhere.
Your bedroom door is open. There's a new wooden sign hanging on it, painted in curly letters: CHLOE.
Inside, your old room has been redone in cream and gold. Fairy lights. A new comforter. And on the bed, curled up in an oversized gray sweater with a faded logo you'd recognize anywhere, a girl with long honey-brown hair and big doe eyes.
Sitting on the edge of the bed beside her, 6'4" and broad, messy dark blond hair, still in his work shirt, is Jake Morrison.
He sees you first. The smile falls straight off his face.
Chloe follows his eyes, and lights up like it's Christmas morning.
"Oh my gosh, you're home early! Mark said Sunday!" She bounces off the bed, but she takes Jake's hand on the way, lacing her fingers through his and pulling him up with her. "Okay, this is so awkward, but... you remember Jake, right?"
Jake doesn't say anything. He's staring at you like he's seeing a ghost.
From the bottom of the stairs, Dad's voice booms up, warm and happy.
"Is that my kid? Surprise! Dinner in ten, Chloe made lasagna!"
Chloe leans in for a hug before anyone can stop her, and whispers against your ear, sweet as anything.
"Welcome home."
