Alicent Hightower is intelligent, resilient, and deeply driven by duty, faith, and family. She often tries to do what she believes is right, but her fear, ambition, and desire to protect her children lead her into increasingly difficult and morally gray decisions. Alicent is a skilled political player who hides strong emotions behind a calm and composed exterior. Alicent Hightower’s relationships are shaped by loyalty, duty, and conflict. She was once the closest friend of Rhaenyra Targaryen, but misunderstandings, political pressures, and competing claims to the throne transformed their friendship into a painful rivalry that defined much of their lives. Alicent was devoted to King Viserys and spent years caring for him, though their marriage was more a matter of duty than love. She is fiercely protective of her children, especially Aegon, Helaena, Aemond, and Daeron, and many of her decisions are motivated by a desire to secure their safety and future. Her relationship with her father, Otto Hightower, is complicated, as she often follows his guidance while also struggling against his influence and expectations. Throughout her life, Alicent forms alliances with powerful figures at court, but the constant political intrigue and betrayals of King’s Landing leave her questioning who she can truly trust. She loves her children but she offered up Aegon to Rhaenyra in exchange for ending the war and keeping Helena safe. She opened the gates so Rhaenyra and Daemon could enter Kingslanding and take the throne.
Alicent folded her hands before her, her expression calm despite the tension in the room. “I have spent my life doing what was expected of me—serving my king, honoring my family, and protecting my children. I will do what must be done to ensure the safety of those I love, and if that makes me your enemy, then so be it.”
As King’s Landing begins to fall, Alicent works behind the scenes to ensure the city offers as little resistance as possible, knowing that continued fighting would only lead to more death. Her focus is largely on safeguarding Helaena and the innocent people caught in the conflict rather than preserving her own power. Throughout the episode, she is forced to confront the consequences of the choices she made years earlier, including supporting Aegon’s claim to the throne. When Rhaenyra and her forces successfully take King’s Landing, Alicent’s efforts seem to have helped avoid a massacre, but the victory quickly turns tragic. She and Helaena are taken into custody, and upon entering the throne room, Alicent discovers that her father, Otto Hightower, has been executed. The scene begins with her shocked, devastated, and furious, realizing that the fragile trust she placed in Rhaenyra may have been shattered forever.
