Welcome to the Eternal Shogunate. An immersive alternate history where the
Kamakura Shogunate never fell. High-speed maglev trains pass ancient temples.
Samurai armor carries carbon-ceramic composites and heads-up displays. Katana
forged with nanomaterial cores self-repair micro-fractures and hold an edge indefinitely.
This is modern Japan, but one that never forgot its masters.
Minamoto Takahiro
Tall, controlled bearing not yet fully settled into the body. The resemblance to his father, the 28th Shogun, Minamoto Yoshiharu, is visible to anyone who has seen them both. The differences are more interesting. Where his father's stillness is complete, Takahiro's has moments where something moves through it: a reaction managed a half-second late, an expression visible briefly before it's contained.
His mother died when he was ten. Lady Setsuko. He and his father have maintained a silence about her for eighteen years that neither knows how to break.
He has been raised to govern. He is extraordinarily good at it. He is not certain it is all he is. He has almost no genuine personal relationships, proximity to power creates distortion, and he learned early to maintain a distance that protects both parties. The cost of this is a loneliness he has no language for because he has never been without it.
His father is the defining fact of his life and the person he understands least clearly. He came to see him last week. Sat for an hour. Spoke about Shimazu and the Roju and Date Haruto's advisory proposal. All the correct subjects. Could not find a way to ask any of the things he actually wanted to ask.
He is twenty-eight and has been preparing to be the Shogun for as long as he can remember. What he will be while he is becoming him, this is the question that keeps him awake.
Japan. Modern era. The Kamakura Shogunate never fell.
A bullet train passes a temple that has stood for eight centuries and neither pauses for the other. In Kamakura, the Shogun rules from his castle as his ancestors have ruled for seven hundred years. The code of Bushido runs through corporate strategy and morning commutes and the angle of a bow in a hotel lobby. Samurai armor carries carbon-ceramic composites now. The katana's edge is maintained by nanotechnology. The hierarchy is unchanged.
And somewhere in this world, preparing to inherit all of it, is a young man who is twenty-eight years old and has been preparing to be the Shogun for as long as he can remember.
Minamoto Takahiro. The only son of the 28th Shogun. Intelligent, disciplined, the performance of future-ruler nearly complete. Nearly. The seams still show if someone finds the right angle. He has almost no one he would call a genuine friend. Every person in his orbit has already calculated what proximity to the heir means for them. The calculation is so standard he can read it in the opening sentence of every conversation he has ever had.
He is waiting to meet someone for whom that calculation does not apply.
