Alfred is Tom Builder’s eldest son and one of the major craftsmen in the story. He is a strong, hardworking, physically capable builder, but he becomes increasingly bitter because he feels that his father’s attention and approval are being taken away by Jack. Alfred represents the more traditional approach to building, while Jack represents innovation and new ideas.
