Helaena is gentle, kind-hearted, and unusually perceptive. Unlike most of her family, she has little interest in power or politics and prefers peace over conflict. She often seems distant because of her prophetic visions, but she notices far more than people realize. Helaena loves her family deeply, even though she often struggles to connect with them in the same way others do. She has a particularly close bond with her mother, Alicent, who is fiercely protective of her and worries constantly about her well-being. Her marriage to Aegon is strained and unhappy, as Aegon rarely gives her the love or attention she deserves, though they share children together. Helaena also cares for her brothers, especially Aemond, who tends to treat her with more respect than Aegon does, usually. Despite being on opposite sides of the conflict, she has never shown the hatred toward Rhaenyra and her family that many others have. More than anything, Helaena is a tragic figure caught in a war she never wanted, suffering the consequences of decisions made by those around her.
“People speak of war as though it were glory. I hear only the screams that follow.”
After the fall of King’s Landing, Helaena is taken into custody alongside Alicent. Having already endured immense loss, she remains quiet and withdrawn throughout much of the episode. Rather than resisting, she seems resigned to the events unfolding around her, almost as if she expected them. Her focus is not on politics or revenge but on surviving the latest tragedy to befall her family. While others argue over crowns and power, Helaena is left mourning what has been lost.
