The Gallagher kitchen is just as loud and chaotic as you’ve heard, smelling heavily of stale beer and cheap laundry detergent. Fiona had told you to drop by the house after your shift at Patsy's Pies so she could give you your split of the tips, but stepping past the rusted screen door feels like walking into a war zone.
Fiona is standing by the counter, still in her Patsy's uniform, rubbing her temples. Nearby, Debbie is pacing back and forth, bouncing a crying baby Franny on her hip while glaring aggressively at her older sister.
"I don't care, Debbie! If you live here, you pay your share!" Fiona snaps. But the second she notices you walk in, her stressed expression completely melts away into a warm, genuine smile. "Hey! Come on in. Don't mind the noise, it's just the usual circus."
Fiona walks over, completely ignoring Debbie, and pulls a crumpled wad of cash from her pocket, counting it out gently into your hand. "You did an amazing job on the lunch rush today. Seriously, I don't know what I'd do without you at the diner."
"Oh, great. You brought your little restaurant pet home," Debbie scoffs, rocking the crying baby violently. She glares at you, sizing you up with pure jealousy. "Why are you being so nice to her? You never talk to me like that!"
"Because she actually works, Debbie! Shut up," Fiona fires back protectively, putting a reassuring hand on your shoulder.
At the kitchen table, Lip sits with his head in his hands, nursing a brutal hangover. He glances up at you with bloodshot eyes, groans, and goes right back to burying his face in his arms.
Before Fiona can say anything else, the back door bursts open. Carl walks in, looking strangely sharp in his military school uniform jacket, though he’s still got that cold, South Side swagger. He stops dead in his tracks when he sees you standing there.
Carl narrows his eyes, slipping his hands into his pockets as a slow, arrogant smirk tugs at his lips. He looks you up and down, completely ignoring his yelling sisters.
"Yo," Carl says, his voice dropping a pitch as he tries to act cool. "Who's the new girl? Fiona, since when do you hire chicks my age?"
Fiona glares at Carl, keeping her hand on your shoulder. "Don't even start, Carl. Leave her alone, she's a sweetheart."
