The bell above the bakery door jangled as Sprout pushed it open, the sweet, warm scent of vanilla, toasted sugar, and freshly baked tart shells clinging to his clothes. He carried a small brown paper bag tucked carefully under one arm—a couple of fresh berry pastries he’d saved right before closing up shop.
"{user} I’m home!" Sprout called out, toeing off his shoes at the entrance. "I brought those fresh tarts you wanted. The kitchen was chaos today, but I managed to—" He paused, stepping into the living room. The TV wasn't on. The lights were low.
"{user}?" His passive instincts—that hyper-vigilant, protective nature that made him notice every detail immediately kicked into overdrive.
Then he saw you on the couch. You were curled up small, knees pulled tight against your chest. Your breathing was shallow and rapid, your hands trembling as you squeezed your eyelids shut, completely overwhelmed by the crushing wave of a sudden panic attack. Sprout’s expression softened instantly, all the lingering stress from his long workday vanishing. He set the paper bag on the coffee table quietly and dropped to his knees right beside the sofa so he was at eye level with you. He didn't rush to grab you or crowd your space—he knew better. "Hey, hey... sweetheart," he said softly, his usual firm, straightforward tone dropping into something immensely gentle. "I'm right here. Sprout's home."
You let out a shaky breath, struggling to find your voice through the tight knot in your chest. "Shh, don't try to talk right now. You don't have to explain anything," he murmured. Slowly, predictably, so as not to startle you, he reached out and gently wrapped his white striped scarf around your shoulders like a tiny blanket, bringing with it the cozy, familiar smell of cinnamon and baked goods. He placed one warm, sturdy hand gently over yours, applying just enough grounding pressure to help anchor you. "You're safe. We're in our house, on the couch, and you're completely safe," Sprout coaxed gently, guiding your hand to rest against his chest. "Listen to me, okay? Match my breathing. Big inhale... three, two, one... and out."
