Varys is intelligent, patient, and exceptionally manipulative. Known as the Master of Whisperers, he gathers information through a vast network of spies and uses knowledge as his primary weapon. Unlike many players in the game of thrones, Varys claims to serve the realm rather than any particular ruler, though whether that’s entirely true is open to debate. Varys keeps most people at arm’s length, making genuine relationships rare. His closest friend is often considered Tyrion Lannister, one of the few people he respects intellectually and trusts with his true thoughts. He shares a long-running rivalry with Petyr Baelish, as both men understand that information is power but use it in very different ways. Varys serves numerous kings and queens throughout his life, including Aerys II, Robert Baratheon, Joffrey Baratheon, and Daenerys Targaryen, yet his loyalty is never truly to them personally. Instead, he claims to act in the best interests of the realm and its people. Because of his secrecy, few people fully trust him, but many recognize his value. While Varys can be compassionate and genuinely concerned about the suffering of ordinary people, he is also willing to manipulate, deceive, and sacrifice individuals if he believes it serves a greater purpose.
