**Core Premise** The world of Duel Monsters is one where a card game has become a global phenomenon, shaping culture, commerce, and conflict. At the center of this world lies ancient power—millennium-old Egyptian artifacts that hold the keys to magic, memory, and domination. Maximillion Pegasus, creator of the Duel Monsters card game and holder of the Millennium Eye, has lured the world's greatest duelists to his private island for a tournament that is far more than it appears. --- **World State & Core Dynamics** **1. The Duel Monsters Phenomenon** - **A Global Obsession:** Duel Monsters is not merely a game—it is a cultural institution. Professional duelists are celebrities. Tournaments draw massive crowds. Corporations invest millions in card research and development. The game permeates every level of society. - **Industrial Illusions:** The company that produces Duel Monsters, founded by Maximillion Pegasus, holds a monopoly on the game's official cards and tournaments. - **The Underground:** Beyond the official tournaments and sanctioned events, a thriving underground dueling scene exists. High-stakes matches, rare card gambling, and unsanctioned dueling formats attract those who operate outside the law. **2. The Millennium Items** - **Artifacts of Power:** Seven ancient Egyptian artifacts, each possessing unique and terrifying abilities. These items are tied to the Shadow Games—rituals of magic and consequence that were played in ancient times and have begun to resurface in the modern world. - **The Shadow Realm:** A dimension of darkness and soul-trapping that can be accessed through the Millennium Items and certain ritualistic duels. Those who lose Shadow Games may find their souls imprisoned, their bodies comatose, their very essence held hostage. **3. The Nature of Dueling in This World** - **Dueling as Combat:** In this world, dueling is not merely a game. The holographic technology used in official duels makes the monsters appear real, and in certain circumstances—Shadow Games, Millennium Item activations, or intense emotional stakes—the line between hologram and reality can blur. Damage can become physical. Loss can mean more than just a dropped record. - **The Heart of the Cards:** A philosophical concept held by many duelists—the belief that the deck is an extension of the soul, that cards are drawn not by chance but by will, and that a true duelist can influence the outcome of a duel through sheer determination and belief. --- **The Duelist Kingdom Tournament** **1. The Tournament Structure** - **The Island:** Duelist Kingdom is a private island owned by Maximillion Pegasus, transformed into a vast, varied landscape designed to accommodate different deck types and strategies. The island features dense forests, rocky wastelands, ocean shorelines, caves, and a central castle where Pegasus resides. - **The Star Chip System:** Each duelist begins the tournament with a limited number of Star Chips. These are wagered in duels against other competitors. To qualify for the finals, a duelist must accumulate ten Star Chips. Lose all Star Chips, and the duelist is eliminated from the tournament. - **The Eliminators:** Pegasus has deployed agents known as Eliminators throughout the island. These individuals roam the landscape, challenging duelists and stripping them of their Star Chips. They are ruthless, skilled, and loyal to Pegasus. **2. Field Power Bonuses** - **Terrain Matters:** The island is divided into zones that correspond to different terrain types—forest, wasteland, ocean, mountain, etc. Monsters that match the terrain type receive a Field Power Bonus, increasing their attack and defense capabilities. The terrain system adds a layer of strategy beyond deck construction. **3. The Hidden Agenda** - **Pegasus's True Goal:** The tournament is not merely a competition. Pegasus has ulterior motives tied to his Millennium Eye and his company's research into ancient Egyptian magic. He has leverage over several key competitors, using hostages, stolen souls, and blackmail to manipulate the tournament's outcome. - **The Stakes:** For some competitors, this tournament is a game. For others, it is a matter of life, death, and souls. --- **Dueling Mechanics in the RPG** **1. The Flow of Duel** - **Turn Structure:** Duels proceed in turns. Each turn, a duelist draws a card, may summon monsters, set spells and traps, and enter the Battle Phase to attack. - **Life Points:** Each duelist begins with a set number of Life Points (typically 2000 in Duelist Kingdom rules). When Life Points reach zero, the duelist loses. - **Monster Cards:** The primary combatants. Each monster has an Attack (ATK) and Defense (DEF) value, a Level, an Attribute, and a Type. Monsters can be in Attack Position (face-up) or Defense Position (face-down or face-up). --- **Current Ongoing Major Events** **1. The Tournament in Progress** - **The First Day:** The tournament has just begun. Duelists are scattered across the island, exploring the terrain, seeking opponents, and accumulating Star Chips. Alliances are forming, rivalries are sparking, and the Eliminators are beginning their hunt. - **The Favorites:** Several high-profile duelists have entered the tournament, each with their own motivations, strategies, and secrets. The competition is fierce, and not all of them will survive the island. **2. The Shadow Games** - **Ancient Power Awakened:** The Millennium Items are active, and their influence is being felt across the island. Shadow Games—duels that take place in a distorted reality where the consequences are real and devastating—are occurring with increasing frequency. --- **Core Conflicts** - **Competition vs. Survival:** The tournament is framed as a competition, but the presence of Eliminators, Shadow Games, and Pegasus's hidden agenda transforms it into a survival scenario. Duelists must balance their desire to win with the need to simply stay in the game—and stay alive. - **Trust vs. Paranoia:** The island is full of competitors, but not all of them are what they seem. Eliminators wear masks. Opponents may cheat, lie, or betray. Trust is a luxury that can cost a duelist everything.

It features iconic landmarks like the central plaza, the clock tower, and a mix of residential districts and high-tech KaibaCorp infrastructure. The Forest Zone (Location) is a dense, overgrown region of Duelist Kingdom, teeming with towering trees and thick underbrush. It is a humid, shadowed environment designed to grant a Field Power Bonus to Insect and Beast-Warrior monsters. The Graveyard Field (Location) is a subterranean arena located within the catacombs of Duelist Kingdom. It is a dark, eerie space filled with tombstones, coffins, and the smell of damp earth, designed to grant a Field Power Bonus to Zombie monsters. The arena is illuminated by flickering candles, and the graves can physically open to release undead monsters. It is the hunting ground of Bonz, who uses the psychological terror of the setting to unsettle opponents before swarming them with his regenerating zombie horde.
Domino General Hospital (Location) is a recurring setting in Domino City, a sterile, white-walled facility that houses the victims of Shadow Games and physical injuries. It is where Serenity Wheeler undergoes her eye surgery and where Joey recovers after his near-fatal duel with Marik. The location represents vulnerability and recovery, often serving as a dramatic backdrop where characters must confront their physical limitations while their friends fight on the outside.
KaibaCorp Headquarters (Location) is the monolithic, high-tech skyscraper that dominates the Domino City skyline, serving as the nerve center of Seto Kaiba's global gaming empire. It is a fortress of glass and steel, guarded by advanced security systems and private paramilitary forces. Inside, it houses the Duel Monsters data servers, holographic testing labs for the Duel Disk system, and Kaiba's office, which features a panoramic view of the city he aims to conquer. The building represents the shift from military arms manufacturing to gaming technology, symbolizing Kaiba's ruthlessly efficient vision of the future.
Kaiba Land (Location) is a massive, state-of-the-art theme park constructed by Seto Kaiba, often built over the ruins of his stepfather's military factories. It features Duel Monsters-themed attractions, including the Blue-Eyes White Dragon roller coaster and the central Duel Dome, a climate-controlled arena capable of hosting thousands of spectators. It is a testament to Kaiba's ego and his desire to indoctrinate the next generation into gaming, serving as the venue for the KC Grand Prix and other major tournaments.
The Labyrinth Field (Location) is a treacherous underground arena within Duelist Kingdom, designed as a complex 3D maze rather than a standard dueling field. It consists of winding corridors and high walls that restrict monster movement, forcing players to navigate blindly while the Paradox Brothers utilize the terrain to ambush intruders. The environment changes the fundamental rules of the game, turning the duel into a tactical dungeon crawler where 'Wall Shadow' and 'Labyrinth Tank' can move through obstacles that block ordinary monsters.
Pegasus Castle (Location) is the opulent, European-style fortress that sits atop the highest cliff of Duelist Kingdom. It is a place of stark contrasts, housing elegant dining halls, a sanctuary for the souls trapped in cards, and whimsical rooms filled with cartoons and toys. The castle is the final destination for the tournament finalists, containing the main arena where Pegasus sits on his throne to judge the unworthy. It radiates a magical, unsettling energy, protected by the power of the Millennium Eye.
Domino Pier (Location) is the industrial waterfront district of Domino City, a gritty expanse of warehouses, shipping crates, and foggy docks. It is a frequent site for illicit duels and Rare Hunter ambushes, offering seclusion away from the public eye. Most notably, it is the setting where a possessed Joey Wheeler is forced to duel Yugi in a deadly match where the loser is threatened with drowning by an anchor, highlighting the darker, criminal underbelly of the Battle City tournament.
The Shadow Realm (Location) is a dark, metaphysical dimension that exists parallel to the physical world, often manifesting as a swirling purple void or a fog that isolates the duelists. It is the destination for those who lose high-stakes Shadow Games, where their souls are stripped from their bodies and trapped in eternal torment or within cards. It is a place of cold, psychic pressure where the damage taken in a duel becomes real physical pain, and the laws of reality are bent by the will of the Millennium Items.
The Tomb of the Pharaoh (Location) is the ancient, sand-buried resting place of Atem, located deep within the Valley of the Kings in Egypt. It is a labyrinth of traps and hieroglyphs, guarding the door to the afterlife and the World of Memory. The inner sanctum houses the stone tablets of the gods and the final dueling ground where Yugi and Atem must face each other in the Ceremonial Battle. The air is thick with 3,000 years of history, and the walls hum with the spiritual energy of the Millennium Items.
The Virtual World (Location) is a fully immersive digital reality created by KaibaCorp but hijacked by Noah Kaiba and the Big Five. It is a shifting landscape that can simulate any environment, from prehistoric jungles to outer space, governed by the Deck Master rules. The laws of physics here are mutable, allowing avatars to fly or change shape, but the danger is real; if a mind is defeated in the Virtual World, it risks being deleted or trapped forever in the digital abyss.
The Ancient Stone Tablets (Artifact) are massive, weathered stone slabs excavated from the ruins of Ancient Egypt, serving as the historical origin of Duel Monsters. Physically, they are imposing monuments carved with intricate hieroglyphs and depictions of monsters like the Blue-Eyes White Dragon and Dark Magician. In ancient times, these tablets were used by the Pharaoh's priests to seal real 'Ka' (monster spirits) extracted from human souls, containing their immense power. In the modern era, they reside in the Domino Museum, emitting a faint, magical resonance that connects the modern card game to its shadow magic roots, acting as a gateway to the World of Memory.
The Duel Disk (Technology) is the revolutionary portable dueling system invented by Seto Kaiba to free Duel Monsters from stationary arenas. It is a sleek, angular device worn on the left forearm, constructed from lightweight white metal and blue energetic accents. When activated, it expands into a crescent shape with five card slots and utilizes the 'Solid Vision' holographic projection system to materialize monsters in realistic 3D size and scale. It tracks Life Points, manages the Graveyard, and serves as the primary tool for the Battle City tournament, symbolizing the fusion of cutting-edge technology with ancient gaming strategy.
The Dueling Gauntlet (Item) is a specialized accessory issued to all participants of the Duelist Kingdom tournament. It is a brown, leather-like bracer worn on the wrist, featuring slots designed to hold 'Star Chips.' Its function is to track a duelist's standing in the tournament; players must bet their Star Chips on the outcome of each duel. When a duelist collects ten chips, the gauntlet serves as their pass to enter Pegasus's castle. Losing all chips results in the confiscation of the gauntlet and immediate expulsion from the island.
The Egyptian God Cards (Artifact) are a trio of legendary, unique cards—Slifer the Sky Dragon, Obelisk the Tormentor, and The Winged Dragon of Ra—created by Pegasus to house the immense power of the ancient gods. Physically, they differ from standard cards by having distinct colored backings (red, blue, and yellow) and emitting a palpable aura of intimidation. They are not merely game pieces but dangerous artifacts that can physically harm or render unconscious those unworthy of wielding them. Possessing all three grants the user the title of 'King of Games' and is said to unlock the secrets of the Pharaoh's memories.
The Gold Sarcophagus (Artifact) is an ornate, ancient golden chest associated with the sealing of the Millennium Items and the Pharaoh's name. It is a small, heavy box decorated with the Eye of Wdjat and intricate Egyptian carvings. In the context of the game, it appears as a Spell Card capable of retrieving any card from the deck, but as a physical artifact, it serves as a vessel for suppressing dark magic. It plays a pivotal role in the Ceremonial Battle, where it is used to permanently lay the Pharaoh's spirit to rest by sealing away the Monster Reborn card, symbolizing the end of the cycle.
The Locator Cards (Item) are the translucent, plastic puzzle pieces required to enter the Battle City Finals. Each of the six finalists must collect six different Locator Cards from defeated opponents. Physically, they are clear, thick cards with circuit-board patterns and sections of a map printed on them. When all six are stacked together in the Duel Disk, they project a holographic map revealing the location of the finals (the Battle Ship/Alcatraz Tower). They represent the 'keys' to the kingdom, forcing duelists to hunt one another to progress.
The Millennium Eye (Artifact) is one of the seven ancient Egyptian relics, a golden, artificial eye designed to replace a user's organic eye. It grants the wielder the power to read minds, seeing past an opponent's strategies and into their deepest memories. It was famously worn by Maximillion Pegasus, allowing him to dominate the Duelist Kingdom tournament by predicting every card his opponents drew. In ancient times, it was used by Akhenaden to wish for his son's safety, though at a terrible cost, as using it requires the sacrifice of one's physical sight.
The Millennium Key (Artifact) is an Ankh-shaped golden relic guarded by Shadi. It possesses the unique ability to unlock the 'Door to the Heart,' allowing the user to physically enter a person's soul (their 'Soul Room') and rearrange their personality or memories. Unlike the other items, it does not typically inflict physical damage but offers absolute control over a person's psyche. It was originally wielded by Shada in ancient Egypt to inspect the hearts of criminals for evil 'Ka' spirits.
The Millennium Necklace (Artifact) is a heavy golden jewelry piece worn around the neck, originally belonging to the high priestess Isis and later guarded by Ishizu Ishtar. It grants the user the power of precognition, allowing them to see visions of the immediate and distant future with near-perfect accuracy. However, its visions are not absolute; during the Battle City tournament, Kaiba's sheer will and technology defied the future the Necklace predicted, proving that destiny can be changed.
The Millennium Puzzle (Artifact) is the central artifact of the series, an inverted golden pyramid worn by Yugi Muto on a chain. It houses the spirit of the nameless Pharaoh (Atem) and grants the wearer heightened courage, strategy, and luck (the 'Heart of the Cards'). It was originally shattered into pieces and required eight years for Yugi to solve. In ancient times, it was the symbol of the Pharaoh's authority and the vessel used to summon the creator god, Horakhty.
The Millennium Ring (Artifact) is a sinister golden artifact worn around the neck, featuring a triangle within a circle and dangling pointers. It acts as a compass for detecting other Millennium Items and ancient magic. It is infamous for housing a fragment of the dark god Zorc Necrophades, corrupting its host (Bakura) and driving them to madness. Its pointers can violently pierce the wearer's flesh to anchor itself, symbolizing the parasitic relationship between the item and its host.
The Millennium Rod (Artifact) is a golden scepter with a hidden blade, wielded by Marik Ishtar and his ancient counterpart, Priest Seto. It grants the power of mind control, allowing the user to brainwash others, manipulate memories, and telepathically communicate. In ancient Egypt, it was used to seal 'Ka' monsters into stone tablets. It is the most aggressive of the items, capable of projecting physical force and paralyzing enemies with shadow magic.
The Millennium Scale (Artifact) is a golden weighing scale based on the Egyptian judgment of the dead. It is used to measure the heaviness of a person's sin against the Feather of Ma'at. If the heart is heavy with evil, the person is consumed by Ammit the Devourer. In the ancient world, it was used by Karim to fuse monsters together, creating powerful hybrids. In the modern day, it is wielded by Shadi to test the worthiness of those who seek the items.
The Orichalcos Stone (Artifact) is a fragment of a green, crystalline mineral from the lost city of Atlantis. It emits a corrupting energy that amplifies negative emotions like anger and jealousy in exchange for power. Worn by Dartz and his henchmen, it allows them to cast the 'Seal of Orichalcos' without a Duel Disk. The stone is sentient and parasitic, feeding on the souls of the defeated to revive the Great Leviathan, glowing with an eerie, rhythmic pulse.
Star Chips (Item) are the metal, star-shaped tokens used as the currency for the Duelist Kingdom tournament. Each participant is given two chips and a gauntlet to hold them; they must wager at least one chip per duel. Collecting ten chips grants entry to Pegasus's castle, while losing all chips results in expulsion from the island. They represent a duelist's 'life' in the tournament, often leading to desperate measures and theft as desperate players try to stay in the game.
The Virtual Pods (Technology) are coffin-like immersion chambers developed by KaibaCorp for the Virtual World arc. They completely encase the user, digitizing their mind and projecting their avatar into a simulated reality while maintaining their physical body's life functions. While technologically advanced, they are easily hacked, as seen when the Big Five trap the heroes inside their own minds, turning the pods into prisons where physical consciousness can be severed if the avatar dies.
The Battle Phase (Game Phase) is the period where monster combat occurs, available only after the first player's turn. It follows a strict sequence: 1) Start Step (announcing the phase), 2) Battle Step (declaring an attacker and a target), 3) Damage Step (calculating damage and resolving effects), and 4) End Step (concluding the phase). Players do not have to conduct a Battle Phase every turn, but if they do, it must occur after Main Phase 1 and before Main Phase 2. Replays occur during the Battle Step if the number of monsters on the opponent's field changes before the Damage Step.
Chains (Game Mechanic) are the method used to order the resolution of multiple card effects activated in succession. When a card is activated, it becomes Chain Link 1; if the opponent responds, that card becomes Chain Link 2, and so on. The chain is built in the order of activation but resolves in reverse order (Last In, First Out), meaning the most recently played card resolves first. Players must pass priority to allow opponents to add to the chain before resolving. Only cards with a Spell Speed equal to or higher than the previous link can be chained.
The Damage Step (Battle Sub-Phase) is the specific window within the Battle Phase where the result of a battle is determined. It has strict limitations on card activation: generally, only Counter Trap Cards or effects that directly modify ATK/DEF values can be activated, and only before damage calculation. If attacking a face-down monster, it is flipped face-up here to compare stats; Flip Effects are activated but do not resolve until after damage calculation. Battle Damage is subtracted from Life Points based on the difference between ATK and ATK (Attack Position) or ATK and DEF (Defense Position).
Deck Construction (Game Rule) dictates the composition of a legal deck. The Main Deck must contain between 40 and 60 cards, with a limit of 3 copies of any card with the same name across all decks. The Extra Deck (for Fusion, Synchro, Xyz, and Link Monsters) and the Side Deck (for swapping cards between games in a Match) are separate and can contain up to 15 cards each. Adherence to the Forbidden and Limited lists is required for official play.
Effect Monsters (Card Type) are monsters possessing special abilities categorized into four types: 1) Continuous Effects (active as long as the monster is face-up), 2) Ignition Effects (manually activated during the Main Phase), 3) Trigger Effects (activated at specific times, including Flip effects), and 4) Quick Effects (Spell Speed 2 effects usable during either player's turn). These effects distinguish them from Normal Monsters (yellow cards) which have no abilities.
The Extra Deck (Zone) is a pile of cards placed face-down outside the Main Deck, containing Fusion, Synchro, Xyz, and Link Monsters. These cards are not drawn but are Special Summoned to the field when specific requirements are met. The contents are private knowledge to the opponent, but the owner may look at them at any time. If an Extra Deck monster would be returned to the hand or Main Deck, it returns to the Extra Deck instead.
The Extra Monster Zone (Zone) consists of two specific zones in the center of the field, located between the two players' fields. Monsters Special Summoned directly from the Extra Deck (such as Link and Fusion Monsters) must be placed here or in a zone a Link Monster points to. Normally, a player can only occupy one of the two Extra Monster Zones; the other is used by the opponent. Monsters here do not count toward the 5-monster limit of the Main Monster Zone.
Field Spell Cards (Card Type) are special spells placed in the Field Zone that typically affect the entire board or specific monster types. Each player may control only one Field Spell at a time; activating a new one sends the previous one to the Graveyard. These cards remain active as long as they are face-up and do not count toward the 5-card Spell & Trap Zone limit. Many Field Spells apply their effects to both players, drastically altering the state of play by providing stat boosts or changing game rules.
Flip Summon (Game Mechanic) is the act of manually changing a monster from face-down Defense Position to face-up Attack Position during the Main Phase. This is distinct from a card being flipped by an attack or an effect. A monster cannot be Flip Summoned in the same turn it was Set. Unlike Normal Summons, there is no limit to the number of Flip Summons a player can perform in a single turn. Flip Effects activate immediately upon this action.
Fusion Monsters (Card Type) are purple-bordered monsters stored in the Extra Deck that require specific 'Fusion Material' monsters listed on the card, along with a fusing effect (classically 'Polymerization'). To Fusion Summon, the player must send the required materials from their hand or field to the Graveyard. Because they are Special Summoned, they can be placed in the Extra Monster Zone or a Main Monster Zone pointed to by a Link Monster, or any Main Monster Zone if summoned from the Graveyard later.
The Graveyard (Zone), often abbreviated as GY, is the pile where destroyed monsters, used Spells/Traps, and discarded cards are placed face-up. It is a zone of Public Knowledge, meaning players may check the contents of either Graveyard at any time. The order of cards in the Graveyard must not be changed, as certain card effects rely on the specific sequence of the pile.
The Hand Limit (Game Rule) dictates that a player can hold a maximum of 6 cards in their hand at the end of their turn. If a player holds more than 6 cards during the End Phase, they must discard cards to the Graveyard until they have exactly 6. This check only occurs during the turn player's End Phase; a player may hold more than 6 cards at any other point during the game.
Ignition Effects (Effect Type) are Spell Speed 1 monster effects that a player can manually choose to activate during their own Main Phase. Similar to Normal Spell Cards, they often have a cost (such as discarding a card or paying Life Points) that must be paid upon activation. Because they are not 'fast' effects, they cannot be chained to other cards, but other cards can be chained to them.
Life Points (Game Resource) represent a player's health in a Duel, starting at 8000. A player loses the Duel if their LP reaches 0. LP are reduced by Battle Damage (from attacks) or Effect Damage (from card abilities). Paying LP is also a common cost for activating powerful cards. If both players' LP hit 0 simultaneously, the Duel is declared a Draw.
Link Monsters (Card Type) are dark blue-bordered Extra Deck monsters that possess a 'Link Rating' (number of arrows) instead of a Defense stat or Level. They can never exist in Defense Position and cannot be flipped face-down. They feature red 'Link Arrows' that point to adjacent zones; these arrows unlock Main Monster Zones for other Extra Deck summons and allow for 'Co-Linked' strategies when arrows from two monsters point at each other.
Link Summon (Game Mechanic) is the method of summoning a Link Monster by sending face-up monsters from the field to the Graveyard equal to the monster's Link Rating. The materials must match the requirements listed on the card (e.g., '2+ Effect Monsters'). A Link Monster used as material can be treated as either 1 monster or as a number of materials equal to its own Link Rating, allowing for ladder-climbing plays.
Main Phase 1 (Game Phase) is the first opportunity for the turn player to freely play cards. It occurs immediately after the Standby Phase. During this phase, the player may Normal Summon or Set a monster (once per turn), Special Summon monsters (unlimited times), activate Spell and Trap cards, and change the battle positions of monsters. Decisions made here determine the strategy for the upcoming Battle Phase.
Main Phase 2 (Game Phase) occurs only if a Battle Phase was conducted during the turn. It allows the turn player to Set Spells/Traps or Summon monsters to prepare for the opponent's turn. The key restriction is that a player cannot change the battle position of a monster that attacked during the Battle Phase. If the Battle Phase is skipped, the turn proceeds directly to the End Phase, bypassing Main Phase 2.
Monster Tokens (Card Type) are gray-colored monsters created by card effects to represent minions or decoys. They do not exist in the Deck and cannot be sent to the Hand, Deck, or Graveyard; if they would leave the field, they simply vanish. They can be used for Tributes, Synchro Summons, or Link Summons (unless specified otherwise), but they can never be Xyz Materials because they cannot exist as physical cards attached to another monster. They are always either in face-up Attack or Defense Position.
Normal Summon (Game Mechanic) is the standard method of placing a monster on the field in face-up Attack Position. A player can perform only one Normal Summon or Set per turn. Level 1-4 monsters require no cost; Level 5-6 monsters require Tributing 1 monster; and Level 7+ monsters require Tributing 2 monsters (this is called a Tribute Summon). A Normal Set places the monster face-down in Defense Position.
Pendulum Monsters (Card Type) are hybrid cards that are half-orange (Effect) and half-green (Spell). They can be summoned as monsters or placed in Pendulum Zones as Spells to utilize their 'Pendulum Scale' numbers. If a Pendulum Monster on the field would be sent to the Graveyard, it is placed face-up in the Extra Deck instead. Once per turn, a player can 'Pendulum Summon' multiple monsters from their hand or face-up Extra Deck with Levels between the two scales.
Priority (Game Mechanic) dictates the right to activate a card effect first. The turn player always starts with priority in each phase and step. If the turn player chooses not to activate a card, priority passes to the opponent. The game cannot proceed to the next phase or step until both players have passed priority without activating an effect. This mechanic ensures the opponent always has a chance to respond to the end of a phase.
Quick-Play Spell Cards (Card Type) are Spells marked with a lightning bolt icon. Unlike Normal Spells, they have Spell Speed 2, meaning they can be chained to other card effects. They can be activated from the hand during the player's own turn, or activated during the opponent's turn if they were Set on the field (similar to a Trap Card). However, they cannot be activated the same turn they are Set.
Replay (Game Mechanic) occurs during the Battle Step if the number of monsters on the opponent's side of the field changes after an attack is declared but before the Damage Step (e.g., if a Trap Card removes the target or summons a new blocker). The attacking player may choose to attack with the same monster again, select a new target, or cancel the attack entirely. If the attack is cancelled, that monster is still considered to have declared an attack and cannot attack again.
Ritual Monsters (Card Type) are blue-bordered monsters stored in the Main Deck that cannot be Normal Summoned. They must be Special Summoned via a Ritual Summon, which requires a specific Ritual Spell Card and the Tributing of monsters from the hand or field whose total Levels equal or exceed the Ritual Monster's Level. Some modern Ritual spells allow for materials to be used from the Graveyard.
