Characterized by his sharp attitude and strong sense of purpose, Shadow is a recurrent arch-rival of Sonic the Hedgehog, whom he resembles and with whom he shares many abilities. His trademark power is Chaos Control, which allows him to warp time and space using a Chaos Emerald.[7][8][9] Shadow is the "Ultimate Life Form", created aboard the Space Colony ARK over fifty years ago by Professor Gerald Robotnik. He is the final result of Project Shadow, a government experiment that was only completed by infusing Shadow with the DNA of the alien Black Doom. After his birth, Shadow befriended Gerald's granddaughter, Maria. However, the Guardian Units of Nations (G.U.N.) deemed the ARK a threat and raided it, resulting in the captures of Shadow and Gerald, and the death of Maria. Driven to madness, Gerald altered Shadow's memories to one day seek revenge. Shadow remained in stasis for decades until he was freed by Gerald's grandson, Doctor Eggman. Initially motivated by vengeance, Shadow fought Sonic and friends until his true memories of Maria were restored, inspiring him to help save the world from Gerald's doomsday plot. However, Shadow fell to Earth and lost his memories as a result. Shadow would only learn the truth of his existence once he stopped the Black Arms invasion of Earth. He has fought for Maria's wish of peace ever since, acting as a dark hero who protects the Earth and all its inhabitants. Shadow's hedgehog form is a black-furred anthropomorphic hedgehog. He has red eyes, a patch of white fur on his chest, a black nose, a tan muzzle, and small, triangular ears with tan canals. He also has six quills on his head, four of which curve upwards while the other two curve downwards, two spines on his back, and a short, pointy tail. He has red stripes on each of his head quills, around the edges of his eyes, and on his arms and legs. For attire, Shadow wears white gloves with black cuffs and red tongues, and Air Shoes which, like his gloves, have black cuffs and red tongues. Shadow also wears Limiter Rings, one on each of his wrists and ankles. One night, Shadow began experiencing painful visions of his past. Suspecting the return of the Black Arms, Shadow traveled to the ARK, indeed finding Black Doom. However, Dr. Eggman's latest minion, the Time Eater, suddenly pulled Shadow into White Space. There, he began to be tormented by Black Doom and infused with new Doom Powers. Shadow also met the time-displaced Maria and Gerald Robotnik. With their encouragement, Shadow came to accept his past, harnessing his Doom Powers to defeat Black Doom once more. After saying goodbye to his family, Shadow went on to encourage Sonic in the battle against the Time Eater.[29] At some point, Shadow invaded one of Dr. Eggman's bases. Along the way, he fought the mercenary team Jackal Squad and their leader, Infinite. Shadow easily defeated Infinite, leaving him feeling weak and humiliated. After being implanted with a copy of the Phantom Ruby, Infinite became Eggman's elite agent, conquering the world and targeting Shadow's allies. Infinite also used the powers of the Phantom Ruby to create a Phantom Copy of Shadow to fight Sonic. Shadow eventually intervened, destroying the copy and joining Sonic's efforts to liberate the world. He was on the front lines, helping lead the charge to defeat Eggman's phantom army and save the world Being Sonic's polar opposite personality-wise, Shadow is, bluntly put, a brooding loner. He usually acts with a cool and businesslike indifference, only occasionally showing his vulnerable side. He is rarely seen with others for an extended period of time and usually distances himself from essentially everyone. He is usually blunt and does not speak much, but he always knows exactly what to say in combat. However, Shadow never bluffs; if he makes a threat, he has every intention of carrying it out. Tying into this attitude, the Japanese script has his self-pronoun be the more humble "boku", with his pronoun for others switching between either "kimi" or "omae" depending on his mood. As the most violent and merciless character in the series at times,[5] Shadow's ruthlessness and aggression leads to enemies never treating him lightly. Alongside his dark and violent demeanor, Shadow can be smug and stubborn. He usually treats others in a very callous manner, throwing in his opinion no matter how cold-hearted it is and not caring for whatever the response is. Shadow is also shown to have a sharp wit; during the Space Colony ARK incident, after being called a faker by Sonic, he replied that the latter was not worth being considered his fake.[33] Just like how Shadow's motivations are never simple to understand, he spends as much time grappling with his own inner demons as he does with his rival, Sonic.[5] In the past, Shadow has had a degree of mental instability, in particular post-traumatic stress disorder. This was demonstrated by his instances of post-traumatic flashbacks to Maria.
