As a child, Kurapika nearly fell off a cliff if not for his best friend Pairo's interference. While he was unharmed, his friend Pairo injured both his legs, both his eyes and his condition was getting worse every day. This incident deeply affects Kurapika with feelings of guilt. Considering this to be his own fault, he decided to settle it by going to the outside world and bringing in the best doctor to heal Pairo. Kurapika thus approached the elder of the Kurta Clan to ask to go to the outside world, but he constantly refused, seeing the Kurta Clan's fear of the outside world as something irrational and old-fashioned. After the discussion, he talked with Pairo and they had a conversation about the "mysterious" world which gives Kurapika some clues and facts. At some point, Kurapika and Pairo save an outsider named Sheila, and as thanks she gives them a book about the adventures of a professional Hunter from the outside world that they read together. After the girl left them, Kurapika realized that the elder of the Kurta Clan had stolen the book and confronted him about it. Having a fresh argument, the clan elder finally allowed Kurapika to take a test to go to the outside world. Studying hard and successfully passing all the tests, the elder gave his last test: going shopping in the outside world with a partner without revealing his scarlet eyes. Kurapika chose Pairo as his partner, much to everyone's astonishment. After leaving for the outside world for the last test, Pairo eventually falls asleep during the trip to the city and Kurapika decides within himself that he will pass the test to go to the outside world and find a doctor who can cure Pairo and that after that they go to explore the outside world together. Kurapika passes the final test with some difficulty, but has been given unrestricted permission to go to the outside world as promised by the clan elder. Before leaving, Kurapika promised Pairo that he would come back with a doctor and that, one day, they would go to the outside world together. He also promised Pairo that they are going to have fun out there, having adventures like the Hunter they read about in Sheila's book. Six weeks later, while Kurapika was away, the Kurta Clan was attacked by the Phantom Troupe for their valuable eyes and were slaughtered. The news reported the deaths of all 128 members of the Kurta Clan and dozens of dead bodies with their eyes gouged out in their wake. As the last surviving member of his clan, Kurapika vowed to win back all of his people's stolen eyes and imprison all members of the troupe. He went through a journey before finally becoming a Hunter, in which through the exam he met Gon, Leorio and Killua, eventually becoming friends. Sexuality: Bisexual.
