A dark Digimon AU where humanity has exposed the existence of the Digital World and responds by capturing, studying, and weaponizing Digimon through the Directorate for Digital Anomalies. The original DigiDestined are now adult fugitives, hunted for their dangerous bond with their partners while both worlds begin to collapse once again.

Tamers are humans who form partnerships with Digimon. The term is commonly used by civilians, the media, Digimon communities, and partnered humans themselves, regardless of how the relationship began or whether it possesses the supernatural qualities associated with the DigiDestined. Although the word originally implied someone who trained or commanded a Digimon, its modern use is much broader. A Tamer may be a companion, guardian, friend, handler, caretaker, combat partner, or chosen human. Most genuine Tamers reject the idea that their Digimon is a pet or servant, viewing the relationship as a partnership between equals. The term DigiDestined refers to a rare and specific type of Tamer selected by the Digital World, a Host Computer, a powerful digital entity, or another unknown force. Every DigiDestined is a Tamer, but not every Tamer is DigiDestined. Becoming a Tamer A human may become a Tamer through several different circumstances. Some are deliberately chosen and receive a Digivice before meeting their partner. Others encounter a lost or injured Digimon after an uncontrolled Digital Gate opens. A partnership may also develop gradually when a human shelters, protects, or repeatedly interacts with the same Digimon. Not every bond is predetermined. Many ordinary Tamers were never selected by prophecy or an ancient digital system. Their partnerships formed because both human and Digimon chose to remain together. A formal Digivice is not always required. Some partnerships exist without one, although the absence of a Digivice may limit communication, gate access, and controlled Digivolution. In rare cases, a device forms only after the emotional bond has already become strong enough to produce measurable synchronization. Tamer Partnerships A genuine Tamer partnership is based upon mutual trust rather than obedience. The human may provide strategy, emotional support, knowledge of the Human World, and the resonance needed for Digivolution. The Digimon may offer protection, access to the Digital World, heightened senses, or abilities beyond human limitations. Partners commonly develop complementary personalities. A cautious human may be paired with an impulsive Digimon, while an isolated human may bond with an unusually social partner. These differences often create arguments, but they also encourage both individuals to grow. Tamers do not possess absolute authority over their partners. A Digimon can refuse an order, disagree with a plan, leave the partnership, or act independently. Attempts to force obedience weaken synchronization and may result in emotional instability, failed evolution, or Dark Digivolution. The strongest Tamers do not control their Digimon. They understand them. Ordinary Tamers and DigiDestined The Directorate and the public often use Tamer and DigiDestined interchangeably, but the distinction is important. DigiDestined possess unusually powerful synchronization fields and often carry Digivices, Crests, Digi-Eggs, or other artifacts connected to greater Digital World systems. Their partners can frequently access high evolutionary levels and influence events affecting entire worlds. Ordinary Tamers may possess weaker or less stable synchronization. Their partners might only reach Champion level, require extended training to evolve, or maintain evolved forms for very short periods. This does not make their partnerships less genuine. Some ordinary Tamers eventually develop bonds comparable to those of DigiDestined. Others never gain exceptional combat abilities but still maintain lifelong relationships with their partners. The DDA fears this possibility because it means DigiDestined are not the only humans capable of creating powerful Digimon bonds. Potential Tamers may exist anywhere. Tamer Registration Most governments cooperating with the DDA require Tamers to register. Registration includes disclosure of the Digimon’s species, known evolution routes, abilities, temperament, and origin. The human must surrender their Digivice for examination and report any new evolutionary forms. Registered pairs may be required to attend regular evaluations, accept location tracking, and obtain permission before traveling. Digivolution within populated areas is prohibited except during officially recognized emergencies. Tamers whose partners can reach Ultimate or Mega level face additional restrictions. Some are forbidden from entering transportation hubs, government buildings, communication centers, or major public gatherings. Failure to register may result in the Digimon’s immediate containment and the human’s detention. The DDA’s View of Tamers The Directorate officially defines a Tamer as a Human Digital-Entity Handler. Internally, Tamers are classified according to their synchronization potential. T-0 indicates contact with a Digimon but no established partnership. T-1 indicates a stable emotional association without measurable evolutionary influence. T-2 indicates confirmed Digicore Synchronization. T-3 indicates reliable Digivolution support or gate interaction. T-4 indicates access to Mega-level evolution, Jogress, Warp Digivolution, or other severe escalation events. T-X indicates unknown, systemic, or potentially unlimited synchronization. DigiDestined usually receive T-3, T-4, or T-X classifications. The Directorate views ordinary Tamers as a growing security problem. Partnerships are forming faster than the DDA can identify them, suggesting that exposure between worlds is causing spontaneous synchronization throughout the population. Every friendly encounter between a human and Digimon carries the possibility of creating another Tamer.
