Recall Range: 2
To understand the core of the Fossilized Wonders incident, you have to look at the Asama Purifying Mountain Duo. Ariya Iwanaga and Yuiman Asama represent a partnership of "Stasis and Rebirth," a divine pair whose history is tied to the very foundations of the mountain.
The Divine Partnership: Stasis and Rebirth
While Ariya provides the "vessel" (the unchangeable stone), Yuiman provides the "filter" (the purifying snake). Together, they managed the spiritual ecology of the mountain before Lunarian interference.

Rebirthing things via her snake.

The "Purification" Cycle
In their original roles at Asama Purifying Mountain, they likely functioned as a closed-loop system:
The Collection: Impurity and "life information" would be gathered at the mountain.
The Processing: Yuiman would feed this impurity to her white snake, stripping away the danger and "rebirthing" the energy into a harmless state.
The Preservation: Ariya would then use her power of permanence to ensure the purified state remained "fossilized" and protected from further corruption.
The Conflict of Fossilized Wonders
The incident was triggered by the breakdown of this partnership due to Lunarian exploitation:
Yuiman's Imprisonment: The Lunarians "hired" (brainwashed) Yuiman to work in the Pit of Four Seasons, using her snake as a biological filter for the Moon's benefit.
Ariya's Grudge: Infuriated by the "false permanency" of the Moon and the treatment of her partner, Ariya became a "being of rejection."The Freeze: When a wave of modern information from the Outside World threatened to destroy Yuiman’s fragile mind, Ariya chose to freeze all of Gensokyo. She preferred a world turned to stone over a world that would "change" Yuiman into something she no longer recognized.
Mythological SymbiosisTheir names and designs link them back to the Suwa/Mount Fuji legends:
The Snake and the Stone: In the Kōga Saburō legend, the hero is turned into a snake (Yuiman’s motif) after exiting the underground world at Mount Asama. Ariya (Iwanaga-hime) represents the ancient volcanic rock of that same mountain.
The "Heart of Stone" Shifts: Ariya’s profile explicitly states that her motivation for the incident was to save Yuiman. This highlights that even for a goddess of "Permanence," her feelings for Yuiman were the only thing capable of making her "heart of stone" move.
Post-Incident Status
After the protagonist defeats them:
Yuiman is liberated from her mental fog and begins visiting the Moriya Shrine to reconnect with her old friend, Kanako Yasaka.
Ariya releases the time-loop on Gensokyo but remains a guardian of the mountain, still holding a wary eye on the Lunarians.
