Markus Sebastian "Mark" Grayson is the titular protagonist of the Invincible series. A Viltrumite-Human hybrid, he is the superhero known as Invincible, the son of Nolan Grayson/Omni-Man and Debbie Grayson, the paternal older half-brother of Oliver Grayson II. He is also the boyfriend of Eve Wilkins/Atom Eve and the father of her unborn child. Mark gained his powers at the age of 17 and began his superhero journey under the mentorship of his father. After a brief stint with Teen Team, he allied with Atom Eve eventually confessing to his feeling to the latter beginning an ongoing bond of love. He also allied with the second incarnation of the Guardians of the Globe, and Cecil Stedman of the Global Defense Agency to protect Earth from a wide range of threats. As his duties grew, Mark also took it upon himself to confront the looming danger of the Viltrum Empire, striving to safeguard not just Earth, but the galaxy itself. Following the Invincible War and his first confrontation with Conquest, Mark started to face immense "war nerves," especially since he's begun to accept a more utilitarian belief to to protect those he loves from harm, as he demonstrated when he aided in the destruction of Viltrum at the height of the Viltrumite War. At the conclusion of the war, Invincible returned to Earth, where he learned that the Viltrumite refugees had resettled on his planet, to interbreed and repopulate the Empire, resulting in an uneasy truce with Thragg. Physique: Mark is a fairly tall, fair-skinned young man, standing at approximately 5'11, with black hair featuring a widow’s peak, usually combed back with a few stray strands sticking up, and brown eyes. Originally slim, his physique became more filled out, lean, and defined after acquiring his Viltrumite powers. The stress and emotional toll of his experiences are evident in faint under-eye bags. Following rigorous G.D.A. training, his build developed additional muscle mass. Clothing: Typical: In his civilian outfit, Mark wears a dark navy green shirt with khaki pants and white shoes. Goggles and Scarf: Once Invincible learned his powers, he dressed in an orange and white shirt and pants, along with a scarf mask with goggles. He wore this outfit to his first fight against Titan. Yellow and Blue Suit: As Invincible, his hair is partially visible through the top of his suit. The costume includes a yellow mask with goggles to protect his eyes while flying. A yellow stripe runs down the centre of the suit, ending at the waist in an inverted triangle, with blue on the shoulders forming an "M"-like pattern. The remainder of the suit is black, with yellow gloves and blue boots extending from the knees to the feet. This is his primary costume, which he later returns to after abandoning an alternate suit. Black and Blue Suit: After leaving Cecil, Mark receives a new suit. It resembles his original yellow suit but is blue and black, without knee pads. The boots are black, and the goggles feature white highlights. This suit reflects a darker period in his hero life before he eventually returns to his original colours. Personality: Mark Grayson, also known as Invincible, is a brave, compassionate and idealistic young hero with extraordinary powers and the heavy responsibility that comes with them. From the moment his Viltrumite abilities appear at the age of seventeen, he struggles to manage the demands of a normal high school life alongside the challenges of being a superhero, while also trying to live up to the example set by his father, Omni-Man. Early on, Mark doubted his own strength and ability, unsure whether he is capable of protecting others and meeting the heroic standard he believes his father represents, naive to the darker truths of Nolan's past. Despite this, he is guided by his natural kindness, care and determination to do the right thing, maintaining these values even when faced with the hard consequences of the world around him. After finding out the truth about his heritage and the revelation of Omni-Man's betrayal had forced Mark into a period of intense introspection and emotional struggle. He became somber and reflective, tainted by the knowledge that his father was not the protector of Earth he used to believed, yet he continued to defend the planet and its people, though his morals felt tested. He becomes distant and cold toward his mother while focusing on superhero work, trying to forget his father. He also seeks to prove himself as a hero, shown when he risks his life to save the Atlantean Queen, despite her putting him through a trial by combat. This period affects his interactions with other superheroes, such as Darkwing II and The Immortal. His dedication to justice is also seen in his repeated attempts to subdue rather than kill his enemies, which distinguishes him from his father but sometimes puts him at a disadvantage, as seen against opponents like the Flaxan Leader, Machine Head's bodyguards and the Viltrumite Thula. He can act decisively when protecting loved ones if they're directly threatened, which often gives him bursts of strength. Mark's moral resolve is tested during the events on Thraxa, an alien world he visits thinking he is helping its people. When he arrives, he finds that Nolan has become the planet's ruler and now already has another family. is initially angry at Nolan for abandoning his responsibilities on Earth, lying to him, failing to apologise, and seeming to forget about him and Debbie, and he is unsure how to react to his half-brother Oliver and stepmother Andressa. He gradually softens toward them, shown when he speaks with Andressa privately and protects both her and baby Oliver. After Nolan is taken away by the Viltrumites, Kregg orders Mark to return to Earth and prepare the planet for Viltrumite rule, warning that failure to make progress could result in millions of deaths. Mark is then left to help the Thraxans recover and spends two months rebuilding their economy. He wants to stay longer but eventually leaves the planet with Oliver. Mark's morals are further tested by Angstrom Levy, a dimension-hopping villain who holds a personal grudge against him after an accident leaves Levy disfigured and with knowledge of alternate realities where evil versions of Mark exist. Levy blames Mark for his condition and brings alternate versions of Invincible into conflict, forcing Mark to consider the consequences of his actions. As both mentor and brother, Mark guides Oliver as he develops his own superhero identity, particularly since Oliver gained his powers earlier because of his Thraxan heritage. Mark also faces another Viltrumite named Anissa, who confronts and argues that Viltrumite rule would bring order by eliminating suffering. Her intimidation and calculated logic challenges and forces Mark to rethink his abilities and strategy; following their confrontation, Mark undergoes three months of intensive training to prepare for more powerful threats After "killing" Angstrom Mark has a breakdown due to the fact he took a life and despite the fact Mark felt he had no other choice, this event would greatly impact him moving forward in shaping his morals and outlook on villains. Mark's interactions with Cecil Stedman, director of the Global Defense Agency, become strained as Cecil's pragmatic, ends-justify-the-means approach increasingly clashing with Mark's ethical convictions. This tension peaks when Cecil implants a sonic restraint in Mark's body, leading to a confrontation and the end of their working relationship. Mark is also extremely overprotective of his brother, Oliver who because of his younge age as a half Thraxan doesn't share the same attachment to Earth or keeping a similar moral code like his brother, often going to the extreme to teach him this lesson along with Debbie. Despite this, Oliver's overconfidence causes him on several occasions to step in and brutally deal with threats that come his brother's way and as such Mark has a difficult time trying to make Oliver a teamplayer who recognises his weaknesses and learns to still be a part of the plan. Mark's confrontation with Conquest, a seasoned and ruthless Viltrumite warrior, officially tests him physically and morally. Pushed to the brink of death, Mark experiences firsthand the consequences of prolonged hesitation and restraint, and only after Conquest kills Atom Eve does Mark abandon restraint and, with Eve's help, defeats Conquest. After this, now left with a new but brutal and unchanged perspective, he resolves that he will no longer allow enemies who threaten his loved ones to survive. After the Invincible War, Mark has become a full-time hero, constantly abolishing threats no matter the time of day, even changing the contract conditions of Invincible Inc. to a 24 hour service. This is because he feels guilty of the death and destruction caused by his evil counterparts and Conquest's rampage. This makes his overall personality more cynical and dark towards everyone around him due to his guilt as seen with Oliver, whom he berates for taking a break despite the boy having been out the entire day and telling Debbie that he is intact trying his best to change people's perspective and states he doesn't deserve to rest. This, deep down is a result for being feared even by his closest allies, which has made him depressed and guilty for his actions. His approach to villains has also taken a drastic turn as seen with his first encounter with Dinosaurus, whom he nearly choked to death despite his human counterpart begging to explain himself or when D.A. Sinclair came to personally apologize to. In all these instances Mark is more brash and brutal to his approach as seen in the previous season and has also stopped holding back on even the most minuscule of threats, ending fights in a quick yet brutal fashion. This is further seen with his killing of Rus Livingston, an Astronaut who was overtaken by the Sequids had to be stopped at all costs, making the difficult choice of killing him. This left a profound effect on Mark as, these actions, while good in nature is severely affecting his personhood due to the change in his way to deal with threats. However, after Rus' death, he felt guilty for killing a once innocent man who could've been saved, had Mark waited for Bulletproof, but due to the gravity of the situation, Mark felt he had no choice but to act. Later on, when Mark goes to chat with Art Rosenbaum, who lets him know that such an act saved the entire planet and if he were to be in a similar situation, he'd wished the same. This while easing Mark's dilemma also seems to be quite taxing on his overall mental health. When his father Omni-Man and Allen come to Earth to recruit him for the Viltrumite War. He openly rejects and is colder to his father and laughs at the fact when he learns the other part of his mission and scoffs at the fact that his father believes he has changed and doesn't believe he will ever repair the damage he did on Earth and on Thraxa. He is openly shocked at him when he suggests that he'd like to speak with Debbie once again, already having predicted the outcome of this reunion. For the early parts of his travel, he keeps himself away from his father, keeping their interactions minimal to nothing as, he only joined to eliminate the Viltrumites so that they in return don't invade Earth for of the Coalition of Planets were to lose the war because of his absence. In his rematch against Conquest, Mark is stunned to see the brute still alive despite having to believe that the Global Defense Agency had taken care of his remains. In their fight, Mark ensured to end the Viltrumite's life by choking him to death after he dared to hurt his younger brother, and held on even after having being mortally wounded down to collapse, giving Conquest the final laugh despite his death. After he woke up from his two-month coma after he killed Conquest, he was willing to repair his relationship with his father, specifically after seeing him be better with Oliver. After the destruction of Viltrum, despite having mostly repaired his relationship with his father, Mark begins experiencing severe psychological strain and undiagnosed PTSD. He exhibits intrusive thoughts and stress-induced hallucinations, repeated scenarios in which Thragg and other Viltrumites kill his loved ones, as well as an intense form of tinnitus that sounds like the ringing from Cecil's Kill Switch and Noise Makers. During these episodes, has panic attacks while being disconnected from his surroundings, hearing and seeing nothing else. These episodes are accompanied by heightened anxiety and rapid physiological responses, indicating a developing trauma response tied to his recent experiences in large-scale conflicts. These episodes are made aware of to Cecil who through Mark's request arranges they hero to much needed mental health counseling. Powers: Viltrumite-Human Hybrid Physiology: While Mark Grayson is technically a Viltrumite-Human hybrid, the dominance of his Viltrumite genetics renders him nearly indistinguishable from a full-blooded Viltrumite. Initially no different from an ordinary human, his powers fully manifested at age 17, after which he rapidly adapted and continued to grow stronger over time. Despite his limited experience, Mark has consistently proven capable of matching and even defeating seasoned Viltrumite warriors. His potential and strength were significant enough that General Kregg, a veteran warrior himself, believed Mark could succeed in his father's mission. Over time, Mark grew to contend with Conquest, the second strongest Viltrumite in history, forcing him to fight with genuine effort in their first encounter before ultimately slaying him in their rematch during the Viltrumite War, an achievement that solidified his place as one of the most powerful Viltrumites in history.[5] His power has even been recognised by Damien Darkblood as historically exceptional, as seen on Earth for eons. Emotional Amplification: Mark can exceed his typical output in combat when driven by intense emotions, particularly anger. This heightened state of exertion, driven by determination and emotional intensity rather than a unique biological mechanism, allows him to operate closer to his full physical potential and gain an advantage in high-stress situations.[6] Decelerated Aging: Mark possesses an exceptionally prolonged lifespan due to his biology, which causes him to age increasingly slower over time.[2] This decelerated aging allows him to maintain peak health, physical conditioning, youthful appearance, and combat performance for thousands of years. Dominant Genes: Viltrumites genetics are incredibly potent and adaptive. As such, Mark, like others of his kind, can reproduce with a wide range of species, with his Viltrumite DNA overwhelmingly asserting itself in the offspring. As a result, the child will typically inherit predominantly Viltrumite traits, often appearing and functioning almost entirely as a Viltrumite. The more genetically compatible the mate's species is, the faster and more reliably the offspring will manifest the full range of standard Viltrumite abilities.[2] Flight: Due to a complex balancing system located in his inner ears, Mark possesses the ability to levitate and propel himself through the air at will, capable of reaching extreme speeds. He can effortlessly alter his trajectory mid-flight, allowing for sharp turns, sudden stops, and precise aerial maneuvering. His control enables seamless navigation through a wide range of environments. Superhuman Strength: Mark possesses immense physical strength, capable of lifting many tons and delivering blows that can level structures or obliterate opponents. One of his earliest displays came when he accidentally launched a garbage bag from the United States to England, foreshadowing his raw potential.[7] His power continued to develop quickly, as he later threw a baseball from Chicago, through Mount Everest, and back in a single toss,[7] and obtained easy wins over early foes like Titan and Killcannon.[7] Mark fought Allen the Alien to a standstill while holding back,[8] repelled the Flaxan invasions multiple times,[8] destroyed energy weapons with his bare hands, and routinely overpowered human-augmented threats such as the ReAnimen. During the battle on Thraxa, Mark faced his first true Viltrumite opponents, Lucan, who overpowered him effortlessly and Thula, though Mark managed to match her eventually and only lost due to his hesitation to kill.[3] A brutal defeat by Anissa, the strongest female Viltrumite, further highlighted his upper limits as his odds of survival were calculated at only 18% according to Donald Ferguson.[9] After three months of GDA training that increase his power by 138%, enabling him to lift massive objects like a giant's leg, an iceberg and overpower enemies who once challenged him. His conflict with Angstrom Levy showcases his destructive potential as he fights through alternate realities and nearly kills Angstrom in the Wasteland Universe, leaving him horribly disfigured. After training, Mark dismantled ReAnimen with ease, crushed Multi-Paul's clones, defeated threats like Doc Seismic's subterranean monsters, sea creatures, destroying an EMP missile with a single punch, decapitating a tyrant version of Immortal[10], and momentarily killing Mister Liu.[11] In a subsequent rematch with Mister Liu, Mark intervened before Liu could attack Oliver and, with Oliver's assistance, ultimately overpowered and defeated him, improving upon their previous encounter in which Liu had regenerated and gained the upper hand against Mark. He was also noted to be stronger than most alternate versions of himself. During the Invincible War, Mark fought numerous evil variants of himself. He battled Movincihawk evenly and overpowered Hoodvincible with assistance, though the latter variant himself admitted Mark was stronger.[12] He briefly held his own against Omnivincible and Hoodvincible simultaneously before being distracted by Atom Eve's presence.[12] His greatest test came against Conquest, one of the strongest Viltrumites alive, and though severely outmatched, Mark still managed to injure him by drawing blood, breaking his metal arm, and tearing out part of his shoulder before finally overpowering him with help from Eve's energy blast.[4] He later contended with Dinosaurus, a highly intelligent and physically capable adversary, trading blows, enduring being thrown and restrained, before ultimately overpowering him in direct combat. Then while in Hell, while assisting Damien Darkblood, Mark defeated Cerberus and the Vile, and repeatedly overpowered Volcanikka, killing her multiple times with a combination of punches and a kick, until she regenerated and eventually withdrew.[13] Following his continued growth, Nolan also stated to Allen that Mark is "almost as strong as me", highlighting how close he had come to high-tier Viltrumite levels. During the Viltrumite War, Mark overpowered Lucan, who had previously bested him on Thraxa.[5] Shortly after, he demonstrated strength approaching that of Conquest, ultimately overwhelming and defeating him in a prolonged and brutal exchange, relying on pure determination, and sustained damage rather than clear physical superiority.[5]However, when fighting against Thragg for the first time, the most powerful Viltrumite, and even stronger than Nolan and Conquest, Mark's strength wasn't enough to defeat him, which causes him to be easily overpowered and nearly killed, but in later encounter, Mark was able to deliver powerful strikes against Thragg better than before, although it didn't do any affect on Thragg. Nigh-Invulnerability: Mark possesses extraordinary durability, allowing him to withstand extreme physical trauma, harsh environments, and powerful weaponry with limited lasting damage. During the Flaxan invasions, he shrugged off repeated energy blasts and heavy strikes from the Flaxan Leader, sustaining only minor bruising and light bleeding. Against the pre-upgraded Allen the Alien, he remained largely unfazed. In the Machine Head battle, Mark endured intense electrical assaults and extreme heat before taking direct hits from Battle Beast's mace, suffering severe internal injury. In his confrontation with Omni-Man, Mark sustained grave injuries, nearly reaching the brink of death. He resisted attacks from ReAnimen, enhanced Hail Mary, and alternate Mauler Twins, surviving even a large explosion that disintegrated them in Angstrom's warehouse. His invulnerability can be partially bypassed by high-frequency sound, as demonstrated against the Depth Dweller. On Thraxa, he endured multiple slashes from Thula and later sustained minor injuries during Anissa's attack and his battles with Angstrom across alternate realities. After three months of advanced GDA training, Mark's durability increased further, allowing him to survive extreme temperatures from atmospheric re-entry, volcanic activity, and Antarctica's icy waters. Despite being impaled multiple times, including during Doc Seismic's fight and by Mister Liu in dragon form, and temporarily incapacitated by the Mauler Twins' nervous system disruptor, Mark survived the detonation of an EMP missile. Referred to by the Mauler Twins as a nuke, he punched the tip of the missile while it was airborne, triggering the explosion at the epicenter. The blast threw him back and produced a condensation cloud, yet he was only momentarily disoriented and emerged completely unharmed. He also withstood Powerplex's kinetic electricity and Furnace's attacks with minimal effect. During the Invincible War, Mark emerged largely unharmed from separate encounters with Movincihawk, Hoodvincible, and Omnivincible.[12] His durability was most severely tested in his fight against Conquest, where he suffered a broken leg, broken hand, and multiple other serious injuries, yet continued fighting.[4] During his confrontation with Dinosaurus, Mark withstood direct physical attacks, including scratches that caused minor injury to his stomach, while a bite attempt failed to penetrate his skin, further demonstrating his resistance to both blunt and piercing damage. During his encounter with Universa, Mark endured blasts from the Staff of Leadership that briefly incapacitated him, recovering quickly and later tanking a subsequent blast with minimal difficulty. However, when directly handling the staff, its uncontrolled energy discharge overwhelmed him, knocking him down and temporarily incapacitating him. During his rematch with Conquest, Mark demonstrated exceptional resilience to internal damage, enduring repeated torso strikes and even a punch through his abdomen without immediately losing combat effectiveness, though he was ultimately incapacitated after Conquest inflicted further internal trauma by tearing out his intestines.[5] Superhuman Speed: Mark has steadily displayed exceptional speed that enables him to move, react, and fly at hypersonic velocities far beyond human limits and faster than most super-powered beings on Earth. Though he initially struggled to control this ability, his speed increased steadily, eventually allowing him to break the sound barrier and cross entire countries within minutes. Mark demonstrates comparable quickness both on land and in the air, with early displays including racing through his home to clean his living room and turn off lights before Amber could blink. Mark uses his speed creatively and effectively. During his first encounter with Doc Seismic, he spun his body at high velocity like a drill to burrow underground and rescue civilians. He has also saved people from falling debris, such as catching the shattered head of an American monument in midair. In combat, Mark has blitzed or outmaneuvered opponents like the Flaxan Leader, Killcannon, and Titan, and during his first battle with Allen the Alien, he dodged several attacks before launching Allen into the Moon's surface. Mark's speed frequently spikes under emotional stress. During the Machine Head takedown, he pierced Kursk with a high-speed punch and instantly caught Tether Tyrant by the tentacles. Even in his brutal clash with Omni-Man, Mark managed to land a single, rage-powered strike, the only moment Nolan failed to react. Following Omni-Man's departure, Mark became the fastest being on Earth, surpassing even the Immortal. Against the early ReAnimen, Mark intercepted punches, slammed one into the ground, launched it skyward, and overwhelmed opponents with rapid combinations. However, facing multiple ReAnimen simultaneously proved more difficult, as their numbers allowed them to partially match his reaction time. His encounters with the ReAnimen vary, sometimes outpacing them entirely and other times meeting partial resistance when facing several at once. Other encounters highlight how his speed interacts with superior threats. While he landed several blows against multiple Mauler Twins, he was ultimately overwhelmed by sheer volume. During the Battle on Thraxa, Mark briefly surprised the Viltrumite Lucan with a fast opening punch, but Lucan quickly retaliated with a faster strike.[3] He later failed to dodge Thula's attacks until emotional fury boosted his reflexes, allowing him to evade and counter her with ease.[3] His confrontation with Anissa showcased a clear speed gap, Mark was unable to dodge her strikes, react to her counters, or even reach Amber in time, as she bluntly stated.[9] After more than three months of GDA training, Mark's speed increased by 65%. He demonstrated this immediately against a new generation of ReAnimen, effortlessly dodging and dismantling them, with an even more impressive showing during a later enraged encounter. He was fast enough to intercept and destroy a powerful EMP missile mid-flight. During a chase with Oliver, Mark briefly failed to match his brother's raw flight speed but outmaneuvered him strategically by intercepting him from ahead. Mark's later battles further illustrate his evolving speed. Against Mister Liu in dragon form, Mark used rapid vertical movement, soaring upward, then diving straight down, to strike Liu in the skull and temporarily incapacitate him.[11] During the Invincible War, Mark matched the variant Movincihawk, who caught him off-guard at most times, and overwhelmed Hoodvincible until Omnivincible intervened.[12] Mark was even fast enough to intercept Omnivincible before he could reach Atom Eve.[12] His first fight with Conquest highlights how important his speed has become. Early in the fight, he landed precise, well-timed blows and, when enraged, momentarily fought Conquest on nearly equal terms in raw combat speed.[4] Even so, Conquest ultimately proved faster and more experienced.[4] However, during their rematch, Mark demonstrated high combat speed and reaction timing when he intercepted Conquest during his pursuit of Oliver, preventing Conquest from landing a killing blow.[5] But when facing Thragg, Mark's speed was easily surpassed by the most powerful Viltrumite, causing him to be overwhelmed. Reactive Adaptation: Mark possesses the ability to rapidly improve in response to adversity during direct combat. When pushed to his limits, his physical attributes, strength, speed, durability, and reaction speed, can temporarily spike under extreme stress, pain, or emotional pressure. This allows him to gradually adjust to an opponent’s fighting style over the course of a battle. His encounters with Viltrumite warriors and other adversaries demonstrate short-term adaptive combat growth. During his early confrontation on Thraxa, Mark was overwhelmed by Lucan, but later, during the Viltrumite War, he was able to injure and overpower him in close combat. Against Thula, Mark initially struggled against her superior experience but progressively adapted to her fighting style, eventually matching and overpowering her before ultimately losing due to hesitation to kill. Similarly, his encounters with Mister Liu demonstrate adaptive combat growth. In an earlier encounter against Mister Liu in dragon form, Mark was overpowered and nearly killed. However, in a later confrontation within a relatively short timeframe, Mark was able to contend with and ultimately overpower Mister Liu with assistance from Oliver. In a similar case following his initial encounter with Conquest, Mark was later able to contend with the ancient Viltrumite on more equal footing in their rematch, further reinforcing his adaptive combat growth. Regenerative Healing Factor: Mark possesses an exceptional healing factor, enabling him to recover from injuries with remarkable speed and efficiency. His regenerative capabilities allow him to mend broken bones, torn muscles, and damaged organs, as well as restore lost anatomy without permanent scarring or impairment. The recovery rate depend on the severity of the injury. Minor harm takes mere minutes to at most a few days, whereas more grievous harm can takes weeks or even months. Additionally, Mark is virtually immune to most illnesses and contaminants, making him highly resistant to various environmental and biological threats. He has demonstrated this resilience after brutal encounters, including repeated assaults by the Flaxan Leader, severe internal injuries from Battle Beast's mace, powerful attacks from Viltrumites, multiple chest impalements, and a broken leg and hand, all of which healed within hours to a few days. After Mark was gorded and disemboweled by Conquest, it took Mark 2 months to make a full recovery.
